On both sides of the Daxiong Hall of the Shanhua temple in Datong, Shanxi, stand twenty-four statues of the guardian heavenly kings, each with distinct expressions and personalities, established during the Jin Dynasty.

Among these statues, the most distinctive one is a female figure: Hārītī(鬼子母). She stands gracefully, with a small, wicked demon under her feet.

These two statues are extremely infectious and such a creative contrasting technique is indeed rare in the art of sculpture.
