Dellahad walked the streets of her hometown countless times, but she hadneverseen that alley before.
It waslate, nearly midnight, when she found it—a narrow passage between two old brick buildings. The lights above flickered, casting dancing shadows on the damp walls. She felt astrange pull, an urge to step inside, even though the alley gave her chills.
Butcuriositywon out.
With each step, the alley seemed tostretch, the air growing colder. Her footsteps echoed loudly, like the space was much larger than it appeared. The dim light receded behind her until it was justdarkness.
Then, from somewhere ahead, she saw asingle flickering light—like a streetlamp that shouldn’t be there.
She walked toward it. The alleytwisted, the walls angling in ways that defied reason, and the floor slightlyslanted. Each time she thought she’d reached the end, it just kept going.
Finally, she arrived under theflickering lamp. Beneath it was adoor, old and wooden, withno handle.
She raised her hand to knock, but the doorswung openon its own, revealingpitch-blackemptiness.
A whisperdrifted out:
“You came.”
Della’s heart pounded. She glanced over her shoulder, but now the alley behind her wasshrouded in darkness, no sign of the entrance she’d come through.
She had only two choices:go forwardor stay trapped in the alley forever.
Taking ashakingbreath, she stepped through the door. The silence was absolute—no wind, no city sounds. Just her own pounding heart.
Inside, she found along corridor, its walls lined withmirrors. Each mirror reflected the corridor infinitely, creating endless versions of her ownfrightened face. Thewhispercame again, echoing all around.
“Why did you come?”
Della tried to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. She passedmirror after mirror, each reflection seeming moredistortedthan the last—like afunhouse, but darker.
Then one reflectionmoveddifferently. It turned its head, looking away from her when she hadn’t moved at all.Its eyes were empty, hollow black spaces, and acold grinspread across its face.
“You shouldn’t have come,”it said, in a voice that soundedtoo closeto Della’s own.
She screamed and ran down the corridor. The mirrorsstretched on, the path twisting, leading her nowhere. The reflectionsstaredat her, somelaughingwithout sound, somecryingwithbleedingeyes.
At last, she found anotherdoor. She flung it open and stumbled through.
The cool night air hit her like a shock. She wasback on the main street, standing between the two old buildings. The alley was gone—just asolid brick wallin its place.
Panting, she stepped out onto the sidewalk. Everything looked normal again—cars, streetlights, the distant hum of the city.
She glanced back, half expecting to see the alley. But it was justbricks.
And yet… in thereflection of a nearby shop window, she saw somethingbehind her. A silhouette withempty eyes, staring.
When she spun around,no onewas there.
