Caleb had never noticed theextra roomin his apartment before.
He had lived there for nearly a year—one bedroom, one kitchen, one bathroom. That was it. But one evening, as he walked past the hallway, he saw something that made himstop cold.
Adoor.
It was on the left side of the hallway, where there should have been only a wall. The door wasplain, wooden, with no markings. It had asilver handle, slightlytarnished, as if it had been there for years.
Caleb’sstomach tightened.
Heknewthis door hadn’t been there before.
Slowly, he reached out andturned the handle.
Itopened easily.
Inside, there was aroom he had never seen—small, empty, withpale yellow wallpaperpeeling at the edges. A singlewooden chairsat in the middle of the room, facing away from him. The air wasstale, thick withdust.
Caleb stepped inside.
The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the airchanged.
Thesilence deepened, pressing against him like a weight. He felt like something waswatching him, though the room was empty.
Then he noticed something worse.
Thechairhad turned slightly.
Just enough to face him.
A chill ran through his spine. He swallowed, backing toward the door. He didn’t know why, buthe needed to leave. Now.
But when he reached for the handle—
The door wasgone.
Only asolid wall remained.
Caleb’s breathhitched. He turned back toward the chair.
Now,someone was sitting in it.
A figure, thin and shadowed, sat motionless, its head tilted slightly.
Then,it stood up.
Calebscreamed.
The lightsflickered. The air turnedfrigid.
And then—
The door was back.
Caleblunged for it, tumbling out into the hallway. The moment he crossed the threshold, the doorslammed shutbehind him.
His handsshaking, he stepped backward.
The door wasgone again.
Only a blank wall remained.
But sometimes, late at night, when everything was silent, Caleb swore he could hear it.
The sound of achair scraping across the floor.
Waiting.
