Daniel had worked in the sameoffice buildingfor three years.
It was atypicalcorporate high-rise—gray carpets, flickering fluorescent lights, and elevators that always seemed to beone second too slow.
But there was one thing about the building that never made sense.
There was no13th floor.
The elevator panel skipped from12 to 14. The stairwell hadno accessto a 13th level. And if you asked any of his coworkers, they’d shrug and say,"Most buildings don’t have a 13th floor. It’s just a superstition."
Daniel never thought much of it.
Until one night.
He had stayed late, finishing up reports, when he stepped into theempty elevatorto head home.
The doors slid shut.
The panelflickered.
And then, without him pressing anything, the elevatorstarted moving down.
Slowly.
The numbers on the panelcounted backward—
14… 13.
The elevatordinged.
The doorsslid open.
Daniel stepped out.
He was in adimly lit hallway. The air smelledstale, like dust and somethingrotting. The walls were the same as the rest of the building, but the carpet wasold and stained, and the fluorescent lightsbuzzed faintly.
Something feltwrong.
Every door along the hallway wasshut. No signs, no nameplates.
Just rows ofsilent offices.
Then, he noticed something worse.
There wereno buttons in the elevator anymore.
Just ablank panel.
His stomachtightened. He turned back to the hallway, hesitating—
A door at the far endcreaked open.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Not moving.
Not speaking.
Just…watching him.
Daniel’s breathhitched.
The lightsflickered, and for a split second, he saw its face.
Ahollowed-out expression.Empty eyes.
And worst of all—
It looked exactly likehim.
The elevator doorsslammed shutbehind him.
The floor beneath himlurched, and suddenly, the numbers on the panel reappeared.
12… 14.
No13.
The doors opened.
Daniel stumbled out into his familiar office hallway, his hearthammering. The elevatorwas normal again.
The 13th floor was gone.
But as he turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of the elevator’s mirrored surface—
And in his reflection, theother himwas still standing in the elevator.
Watching.
Smiling.
