NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Calusa Waterkeeper (Florida, U.S.) has recently published their latest Fecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) testing results. The report indicates that elevated levels of FIB were found at Manual’s Branch in Fort Myers. Given the high levels of bacteria and the surrounding urbanization, there is an increased risk of illnesses for anyone who comes into contact with that water. Calusa Waterkeeper is concerned that the contaminated water may flow towards the city. They are conducting frequent tests to identify the sources of contamination, but so far, they have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause.
Delaware Riverkeeper (Delaware, U.S.) Maya van Rossum addresses the issue of billions of gallons of sewage found in Philadelphia’s waterways. According to data analyzed by CBS News Philadelphia, nearly 14 billion gallons of raw sewage and polluted stormwater have flowed through the city’s waterways. A major source of this contamination is a train tunnel-like structure that is part of Philadelphia’s combined sewer system. This system can become overloaded during heavy rainfall, forcing contaminated water back into homes. Van Rossum points out that these polluted water spills are especially detrimental to economically challenged neighborhoods, posing significant health risks. Currently, the city is in the process of implementing the “Green City, Clean Waters” program to reduce the amount of stormwater entering the sewer system. However, many believe this new initiative will not fully resolve the longstanding problem of sewage and storm runoff polluting the waterways.
Pashur River Waterkeeper (Bangladesh) and its partners organized a human chain event in Mongla to celebrate World Earth Day. The local leader from Dhaka-Mongla emphasized the need for humanity to shift away from fossil fuels and transition to green energy to protect the Earth and ensure energy justice. Other speakers stressed the urgent need to expand the use of renewable energy to combat climate change and create a livable world for future generations. They also called for the immediate shutdown of the environmentally destructive Rampal coal-based power plant located near the Sundarbans. Many farmers, fishers, women, youth, and people from all walks of life participated in the human chain, expressing their commitment to environmental protection.
Richmond Riverkeeper (Australia) has welcomed Zoe White from OzFish as their new Riverkeeper. Zoe currently serves as OzFish Unlimited’s Project Manager for the New South Wales North Coast, where she leads fish habitat restoration projects and works closely with local communities. Her dedication to protecting aquatic ecosystems aligns seamlessly with Richmond Riverkeeper’s mission.
In an exciting new chapter, Richmond Riverkeeper is also launching a podcast: We Are The Riverkeepers, which will explore the health of the Richmond River and highlight findings from a recent three-year study of the river.
San Diego Coastkeeper (California, U.S.) Executive Director Phillip Musegaas recently addressed the Tijuana River, which has made America’s top ten Most Endangered Rivers List for the second consecutive year in 2025. Describing the river as an open sewer, Musegaas highlighted the toxic conditions forcing nearby communities to live in hazardous environments. Emerging data reveals the release of hydrogen sulfide gas from the contaminated water, and over two dozen industrial chemicals—many carcinogenic—are steadily flowing through the river. These chemicals are aerosolizing, posing serious respiratory risks. Activists warn of the river's devastating impact on public health, biodiversity, and local ecosystems, stressing the need for collective action to demand environmental and public health justice.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Khowai River Waterkeeper (Bangladesh) recently conducted a field visit to investigate industrial pollution in Habiganj. The team inspected heavily polluted water bodies in the area. Speakers highlighted that the local community has long been protesting against industrial pollution, warning that Habiganj could face an environmental disaster similar to the endangered areas around Dhaka’s rivers. A recent study found microplastics in the water and fish of the Sutang River. This contamination has severely compromised the river’s physicochemical properties, posing a significant threat to public health and biodiversity in the region. Furthermore, the speakers explained that unregulated industrial pollution in Habiganj has led to a severe humanitarian crisis. Livestock, crops, river and wetland fish, and aquatic biodiversity are all at risk, while residents are increasingly suffering from various health problems due to this environmental disaster.
Waterkeepers Iraq-Kurdistan (Iraq) is hosting a festival celebrating art, water, and prosperity. The event aims to raise public awareness about environmental issues and the threats facing local water resources. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Forestry Police, Emergency Police, and the Ghatas in Topzawa, who are working to ensure a safe and secure festival. Additionally, they will prepare and deliver boats and equipment to support the event.
