摘要/Abstract
In what ways domestic agenda influence President Prabowo Subianto’s conduct of Indonesia’s foreign policy? A year into his presidency, the president’s conduct of external affairs drew heavy criticism. Some critics have labelled his foreign policy as ‘directionless’ and ‘all style, no substance’. Nonetheless, closer observation and evidence-based analysis on the pattern and focus of the president’s international activism hint an alternative interpretation of Prabowo’s foreign policy. I argue domestic agenda, together with President Prabowo’s desire to implement state capitalism, have strengthened the element of opportunism in Indonesian foreign policy. This circumstance also means that the orientation of the country’s foreign policy has been further tilted towards material gains. A trend that has been apparent since the previous administration under President Joko Widodo (2014-2024).
