Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD.com and an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patient, revealed in a pre-recorded video released on Tuesday that his condition has progressed to a near-terminal stage, even as he vowed to continue working to push forward treatment breakthroughs.
Diagnosed with ALS more than six years ago, Cai has gradually lost the ability to move and speak and now relies on an eye-tracking device to communicate. The video was recorded in August 2024, before he lost his voice, and was originally intended to remain unpublished unless his condition deteriorated.
In the video, Cai said that while his own health continues to worsen, recent medical advances are bringing genuine hope to other patients.
"History has already been partially rewritten," he said, noting that some single-gene ALS patients may now survive and even return to normal life with early treatment, while prospects are also improving for other ALS forms.
He added that he will continue working intensively with the help of assistive technology and promised to share more encouraging developments in the coming year.
Following the video's release, the topic "Cai Lei's condition approaching terminal stage" quickly topped Chinese social media trending lists, with many users expressing support and admiration for his determination and resilience.
