A video posted by a Chongqing netizen inviting strangers to help slaughter pigs in exchange for paotang soup — a traditional rural feast made with freshly slaughtered pork — unexpectedly went viral this week, drawing thousands of people to a village and prompting local authorities to step in to maintain order.
The invitation, posted by a netizen known as Daidai, quickly gained traction on social media. According to the organizer, the offer was made after her elderly father struggled to handle the physically demanding work. A live stream of the pig slaughter on Sunday attracted more than 100,000 concurrent viewers, further amplifying the event's reach.
Chongqing's Hechuan district bureau of culture and tourism said it began coordinating on site early Sunday after noticing the viral post, with the crowd peaking at more than 5,000 people. To meet demand, the bureau said it also arranged for two additional pigs to be slaughtered.
Officials stressed that the gathering was not a coordinated publicity stunt. Instead, police were deployed only to manage traffic and maintain public order. Relevant departments within the bureau are now discussing how to respond to the sudden surge of online attention.
