环球时报援引英国广播公司（BBC）19日报道，英国南部一海滩18日惊现数百万根薯条，散落遍地，部分区域堆积厚度超半米。

Thousands of plastic bags containing French fries have washed up on a beach in East Sussex, southern England, after shipping containers spilled their contents into the sea.

据称，这些薯条来自至少20个巨型集装箱。此前一场风暴侵袭英吉利海峡，两艘货轮上的集装箱坠入海中，受海浪持续冲击，金属集装箱破损，然后卷至东萨塞克斯郡沿岸海滩。

The spill was reported near Eastbourne, where several containers carrying "food and packaging" came ashore earlier this week, the BBC reported. The debris is believed to be linked to containers that fell from cargo vessels during recent storms and rough weather conditions in the English Channel.

就在两周前，大量香蕉也曾被冲上西萨塞克斯郡附近海岸，这批香蕉同样是随货轮集装箱坠入海中后漂至岸边。

薯条的不同叫法

其实，“薯条”在美式英语和英式英语里的叫法并不一样。在英式英语中，薯条通常叫chips，指的是炸得比较粗的土豆条。

而在美式英语中，人们一般把薯条称为French fries，或直接说fries。

需要注意的是，chips在美式英语里并不是薯条，而是指袋装的薯片。在英式英语中，薯片则被叫作crisps。
