很多人在读书时应该都学过places of interest这个词组，老师往往会把它解释为“名胜古迹”，不少翻译软件也采用这种译法。
但如果仔细琢磨这个词，会觉得有点怪：places of interest是如何跟“名胜古迹”对应的？
从语法上来讲，places of interest中的of interest是介词短语作为后置定语，修饰places，短语其实相当于places (that are) of interest (to tourists)。
其中be of interest to somebody是一个固定搭配，《朗文词典》对此的解释是：be interesting to someone，即“让某人感到有兴趣”。
比如：It's a book that willbe of interest toa wide range of readers. 这是一本广大读者都会感兴趣的书。又比如topics of general interest 表示“人们普遍感兴趣的话题”。
因此，places of interest可以理解为“游客感兴趣的地方”，它相当于places that interest tourists或者places that attract the interest of tourists。
《牛津高阶英语词典》的单词例句也出现了这个短语：There are many places of interest near the city. 这座城市附近有许多有意思的地方。
可以看到，词典将places of interest翻译成“有意思的地方”，而不是“名胜古迹”。
麦克米伦词典也直接将places of interest解释为places that are interesting。
国外语言学习问答论坛forum.wordreference.com前几年也有中国学习者提到了这个问题：
下面有外国人提到，places of interest并不仅仅局限于风景名胜或者历史古迹，它本质上是指“有意思的地方”。比如在一些语境下，一家网红餐馆或者一个游乐园都可以称为a place of interest。
因此，将places of interest翻译为“名胜古迹”是不够准确的，因为它包含的范围要更广，翻译为“有意思的地方”要更加准确。
如果要翻译“名胜古迹”，可以说：scenic spots and historical sites。
此外，places of interest是复数名词，它的单数形式是place of interest，比如要表达“一个有意思的地方”，要说：a place of interest。
