在生活中我们常有两种表示时间的方式，一种是12小时制，另一种是24小时制，人们根据自己的喜好以及习惯选择适合自己的计时方式。
当我们用12小时制的计时制时，会常常迷糊12a.m.是指正午的12点还是凌晨12点？
AM/PM
首先我们要清楚AMPM的意思，AM是指上午，PM也就是下午，a.m.是拉丁文短语ante meridiem的缩略词，意为before noon，p.m.postmeridiem，意为afternoon——下午，午后；而AMPM的分界线正是一天的正午——noon。
了解了AMPM的意思之后，12AM也就好理解了，凌晨，午夜12点用12AM，正午，白天的12点用12PM。
Nothing or nobody is that important to be the reason why you can't sleep after 12AM.
没有任何事，任何人会重要到需要你过了半夜12点还苦想不睡。
midnight
表示半夜十二点还可以用midnight，专门表示午夜，子夜，半夜12点的意思。
It was 12 midnight when we arrived home.
我们到家时正好半夜12点。
这里还需要注意AMPM的用法，它们都不能单独使用，必须跟在数字后以表示时间，AMPM本来就带有早上和下午的意思，因而不能和in themorningin the afternoon连用，以免构成重复，同时也不能与o’clock连用。
It starts at 10 a.m.
上午 10 点开始
错误示范：
It starts at 10 o’clock a.m.
It starts at 10 a.m. inthe morning.
24小时制
在24小时制的计时方式里，新的一天从0:00开始，时针走过一圈后23:59又会来到新的一天0:00,因此用24小时制似乎更容易理解凌晨12点的概念，书写方式直接写成0:00,不用加a.m.作后缀，因为24小时制里每个数字表示的时间都是固定的，不会出现上下午混淆的状况，同理，18:00也是不需要加PM的。
According to the program, we have arranged for you to practice from 16: 00 to 18: 00 today at the competition hall.
按日程，你们队安排在今天16点至18点在比赛馆训练。
关于时间的短语
Time hangs heavy
时间每分每秒都过的很慢，指时间难以打发，度日如年。
Time hangs heavy in prison.
呆在监狱里真是度日如年。
time marches on
比起度日如年，更多人感觉时间如白驹过隙，转眼就消逝了。time marches on 就是指时光流逝一直往前走，永不回头。
I was very disappointed when it happened. But time marches on, and I've learned to accept it now.
事情发生的时候我相当失望。但随着时间的推移，我现在已经学会接受了。
time flies
表示时间飞逝还有常用的time flies：
As they say, “Time flies when you're having fun.”
常言道：“快乐的时光总是短暂的。”
keep time
keep time主要有两个意思，它可以表达（钟表等）走得准
My watch keeps good/perfect time.
我的手表走得很准。
又有指音乐里的合拍子；按节拍表演
Among other things, the conductor helps the orchestra keep time.
此外，乐队指挥还帮助管弦乐队跟上（音乐）节拍。
call time
call time在美式口语中常用来表示：进行运动赛事时，裁判请求时间的暂停。
The coach called time.
教练请求暂停。
英式英语中用来宣布（酒吧或酒馆）打烊，也指宣布某事结束，终止某事：
An athlete who has called time on his career
已宣布退役的运动员。
time is(not) on your side
这个短语表示时间越长对你越有利或者越不利；有的是时间或者没有时间，指等待情况改善以获得成功的情况。
House prices are all dropping, and in the case of home buyers, time is on their side.
房价全都在跌，对于购房者而言，越往后对他们越有利。
If we wait too long to buy the tickets, the concert may be sold out: time is not on our side.
如果我们一直不买票，音乐会门票可能就卖光了——时间不等人啊。
英语时间的表达
整点
现在是五点整。
It's five.或者It's five o'clock.
还有两个较为特殊的整点表达。
现在是中午十二点。
It's (twelve) noon.
现在是半夜零点。
It's (twelve) midnight.
15分钟
如果现在的时间刚好是15分钟，15分钟又叫一刻钟：a quarter。因此可以有以下的表达：
8:15eight fifteen/fifteen past eight/a quarter past eight
2:45two forty-five/fifteen to three/a quarter to three
半小时
如果所表述的时间恰好为半小时，可以用“half + past + 小时”：
8:30half past eight
4:30half past four
半小时内
如果所表述的时间在半小时之内，可以用“分钟 + past + 小时”：
6:05five past six
3:20twenty past three
9:25twenty-five past nine
半小时外
如果所表述的时间在半小时之外，可以用“（相差的）分钟 + to + （下一个）小时”：
10:35twenty-five to eleven
5:49eleven to six
10:50ten to eleven
通用
尽管上面列举了很多种情况下时间的表达，但其实所有的时间都可以用“小时 + 分钟”直接读：
5:20five twenty
8:30eight thirty
9:40nine forty
