We can begin with a misunderstanding.
Contemporary art is not a style.
It is not “difficult art.”
Nor is it “anything can be art.”
These are outcomes, not its essence.
If we want to locate its point of departure, we must return to one figure: Marcel Duchamp.
When he introduced the readymade into the art system, something fundamental changed:
Art was no longer determined by the object.
Then Joseph Kosuth pushed this further into the realm of language:
art could exist purely as an idea.
Later, Arthur Danto made a decisive claim:
art had entered a state of “the end.”
This “end” does not mean disappearance.
It means that no single standard can any longer define what art is.
And so the question emerges:
when art loses its function, its criteria, and its boundaries—what can it still do?
It offers three responses:
First, a shift from the “artwork” to the “mechanism.”
Second, a shift from “understanding” to “relation.”
Third—and most crucial—a shift from the “image” to “seeing itself.”
At this point, contemporary art converges with thinkers such as Michel Foucault, John Berger, and Jacques Lacan around a shared insight:
Seeing is never neutral.
If we must define contemporary art in one sentence:
Contemporary art is an ongoing reflection and experimentation on seeing, meaning, and authority after art has lost its certainty.
Yet its problem remains:
It has completed the work of dismantling,
but not the work of reconstruction.
And that is precisely why contemporary art still demands to be discussed today.
