这个夏天,走进德胜国际,一场关于新能源电池储能前沿探索即将开启!

Professor Michael De Volder (2020) 曾说:

“很多人觉得碳纳米管很神奇,其实它的合成原理很像种花。你需要种子(金属纳米颗粒)、养分(碳氢气体)和能量(热量)。这甚至能解释古代大马士革钢的奥秘——工匠们在锻打时加入的树叶木材,可能就是无意中提供了形成碳纳米管的碳源。科学,往往是把复杂的原理,回归到最基本的逻辑。”

在电动汽车与储能产业爆发、碳纳米材料成为下一代电池关键突破口的当下,掌握从基础化学到前沿材料科学的贯通视角至关重要。对于 DSI 学生而言,化学与物理作为核心必修学科,正是理解电池、纳米技术等前沿领域的基石。数据也印证了这一点:在德胜学校(国际)的历年毕业生中,大约13%的学生最终选择从事物理、化学及工程相关专业,这为我们邀请剑桥顶尖教授、开设前沿大师班奠定了坚实的生源基础与营造浓厚的学术氛围。而 De Volder 教授的加盟,将把抽象的化学与物理原理,直接映射到最前沿的能源材料与工程应用中,为学生展示一条从德胜国际课程通向剑桥前沿科研的真实路径。

剑桥教授在充分考虑青少年基础与特点的情况下,安排了紧凑而循序渐进的学术理论、应用案例与项目研究内容。项目内容不仅融入了教授本人在麻省理工学院、哈佛大学和剑桥大学等顶尖学府超过20年的研究经验,还结合了他联合创立两家屡获殊荣的电池初创公司的产业经验,更汇集了其研究团队中约30位才华横溢的博士及博士后研究员的最新研究成果。

开发更好的电池,是全世界科学家们当前面临的最紧迫且最激动人心的挑战之一。其紧迫性在于,更好的电池对于交通领域的脱碳以及可再生能源的存储至关重要。同时,电池科学本身也蕴含着众多值得研究和解决、令人兴奋的难题。由于电池需求的快速增长,它也为市场带来了极具吸引力的商业机遇。

在教授的逐步引领下,我们圆满地完成了这次极具难度及挑战性但又非常有趣的课程。这一次课程教授通过一些我们所熟知的数学知识,比如:线性方程,矩阵等等一步步地进行推导,让我了解到了我们平常所接触到的算法背后隐含的原理,我也逐步领略到了数学与人工智能之间的紧密连接性,以及数学应用到计算机领域时可以如此的有趣。

Under the guidance of the professor, we successfully completed this challenging yet fascinating course. During this course, the professor led us step by step, using some familiar mathematical concepts such as linear equations and matrices, to reveal the principles hidden behind the algorithms we encounter in our daily lives. I gradually realized the close connection between mathematics and AI and how mathematics becomes so intriguing when applied to the field of computers.

Our course content included learning about linear regression, partial calculus, Bayesian machine learning, and classification techniques, are particularly interesting due to their relevance and wide-ranging applications in the field of machine learning. One particularly fascinating aspect of these topics is the fact that, regardless of the specific method used, the underlying equations and principles consistently converge to the same fundamental results. Before the event, I thought the professor would be a stern figure. However, during the event I realised he was a very lively and interesting person, with a lot of established works. His lectures were insightful and thought-provoking.

Through collaboration with classmates and Q&A sessions with the professor and teaching assistants, I deepened my understanding of private equity and successfully presented it. In these days of learning, I delved into a new field of knowledge and was surprised to find that the professor was very approachable. This Desheng Summer School, I learned a lot, not only academically but also in terms of character. This summer, step intoDesheng School (International) (DSI)and embark ona cutting-edge exploration of energy storage for next-generation batteries!

Professor Michael De Volder (2020) once said:

"For that we need to understand how carbon nanotubes are made. Although they sound very fancy, actually their synthesis is very much like gardening; something you've all done. In the case of carbon nanotubes, those seeds are little metal clusters, often times iron. The food you feed them instead of soil would be hydrocarbon. Then you need some energy from heat. If you think about how a sword is made, there's lots of iron in the steel which connects as a seed. You heat them up to high temperature, which is also what's needed for carbon nanotubes. "

At a time when the EV and energy storage industries are booming, and carbon nanomaterials are becoming the key breakthrough for next-generation batteries, it is vital to have a connected perspective from basic chemistry to advanced materials science. For DSI students, chemistry and physics – core academic subjects – are exactly the foundations for understanding frontiers like batteries and nanotechnology. The data confirms this: among DSI graduates over the years, about13%have gone on to studyphysics, chemistry, and engineering. This solid student base and strong academic atmosphere make it possible for us to invite top Cambridge professors and offer cutting-edge masterclasses. Professor De Volder’s participation will map abstract chemical and physical principles directly to the most advanced energy materials and engineering applications, showing students a real path from the DSI curriculum to Cambridge-level research.

Professor De Volder holds a tenured full professorship at Cambridge University and has research experience at MIT, Harvard, and other top institutions. More importantly, he has a complete cycle of experience from lab to market – he is a co-founder of two award-winning battery startups, having pushed nanomaterial technologies from theory to real-world applications. Professor De Volder has a unique background spanning top institutions and industry. He heldpostdoctoral positionsatHarvard, MIT, and the University of Michigan, and gained rich industrial R&D experience at a leading European microelectronics research center.

His academic influence in materials science is among the world’s top. He has published about168papers with over13,000citations. His research has appeared in top journals such as Science, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, PNAS, and his Science paper on commercial applications of carbon nanotubes is his most highly cited. Program Introduction

Taking full account of young students’ backgrounds and abilities, Professor De Volder has designed a compact, step-by-step programme coveringacademic theory, application cases, and project research. The programme not only incorporates the professor’s 20+ years of research experience at MIT, Harvard, and Cambridge but also integrates his industry experience as co-founder of two award-winning battery startups, as well as the latest research findings from his team of about 30 talented PhD and postdoctoral researchers.

Programme Theme

Batteries for next-generation cars and energy storage solutions

Developing better batteries is one of the most urgent and exciting challenges facing scientists worldwide. The urgency comes from the critical role of better batteries in decarbonizing transport and storing renewable energy. At the same time, battery science itself is full of fascinating questions worth studying and solving. And the rapidly growing demand for batteries presents compelling business opportunities.

As we seek more sustainable and efficient ways to power human society, understanding the science behind batteries becomes increasingly important. This workshop will first break down the fundamental electrochemical principles that govern battery operation – enabling students to think independently and critically about battery technologies. Based on these scientific insights, we will introduce different battery chemistries and discuss the latest technical advances in the field. Finally, students will learn how batteries are manufactured and how entrepreneurs bring new battery technologies to market.

Programme Outline

·6days of Intensive Academic Training:including introduction to the field and classic theories, cutting-edge knowledge and literature review, project selection, research and material preparation, project presentations, and feedback.

·12hours of Cambridge Professor Guidance:including all-English lectures, Q&A, discussions, and presentation critiques.

·28hours of Professional Mentor Guidance:including strengthening academic foundations, advanced literature discussions, comprehensive problem discussions, project research guidance, and CV coaching.

·6days of Immersive Desheng Campus Experience:work on academic projects in Desheng classrooms, tour core campus facilities and innovative landscapes, and attend Desheng innovation sharing sessions.

Under the guidance of the professor, we successfully completed this challenging yet fascinating course. During this course, the professor led us step by step, using some familiar mathematical concepts such as linear equations and matrices, to reveal the principles hidden behind the algorithms we encounter in our daily lives. I gradually realized the close connection between mathematics and AI and how mathematics becomes so intriguing when applied to the field of computers.

Our course content included learning about linear regression, partial calculus, Bayesian machine learning, and classification techniques, are particularly interesting due to their relevance and wide-ranging applications in the field of machine learning. One particularly fascinating aspect of these topics is the fact that, regardless of the specific method used, the underlying equations and principles consistently converge to the same fundamental results. Before the event, I thought the professor would be a stern figure. However, during the event I realised he was a very lively and interesting person, with a lot of established works. His lectures were insightful and thought-provoking.

I am fortunate to have learned from Professor Ludovic Phalippou. In just six short days, we not only learned about private equity, company valuation, and other financial-related knowledge but also gained a more comprehensive understanding of university teaching methods. Participating in this summer school programme significantly improved my teamwork, self-learning abilities, and communication skills. Through collaboration with classmates and Q&A sessions with the professor and teaching assistants, I deepened my understanding of private equity and successfully presented it. After these improvements, my presentations and understanding received recognition from the professor.

In these days of learning, I delved into a new field of knowledge and was surprised to find that the professor was very approachable.
