后娘使唤她洗衣做饭喂猪砍柴，稍不顺心就拿扫帚把子打她，打完还不许哭，说“哭丧着脸给谁看”。婉芹不哭，她学会了忍着。疼的时候咬着嘴唇，咬出血了用袖子擦掉，擦不掉就等天黑了一个人躲到牛栏里，抱着那只老水牛，把脸埋在它脏兮兮的毛里，让眼泪一滴一滴落在干草上。老水牛不躲，也不叫，就那么站着，任她抱着，眼睛里满满的怜惜。婉芹被后娘欺负只能抱着老水牛哭出来。

婉芹在河边洗衣裳，他就在磨镰刀。婉芹上山砍柴，他就绕远路从山那头过来，帮她捆柴火。婉芹低着头不看他，他就蹲在一边，把磨好的镰刀插在腰后，漫不经心地说起今年的收成，说起山后面那片荒地被人承包了种果树了。婉芹不接话，他也不急。他就在旁边坐着，看天，看云，看远处炊烟一缕一缕从村里升起来。婉芹有时候偷偷看他一眼，正好撞上他的目光，像撞上个火炭，赶紧缩回自己的壳里去。陈大同喜欢婉芹，她做什么他就在。
有一回后娘打婉芹打得狠了，婉芹手臂上全是青紫，隔着袖口都能透出来。她坐在田埂上，把袖口往下拽了又拽，怎么也遮不全。陈大同来了，被他看见了，婉芹低着头，鼻子一酸，没哭出来。“谁打的？”他问。她不吭声。“你后娘？”她还是不吭声。陈大同没再问了。他把镰刀放下，在她旁边坐下。两个人就这么坐着，中间隔着一捆没捆完的柴火。坐了很久，久到太阳从头顶滑到西山头，天边的云被烧成了橘红色，一层一层地铺开，像是谁把一盆炭火倒在了天上。
“以后我护着你。”他说，声音不大。婉芹没应他。她把自己的手缩进那件外衫的袖子里，指头在过长的袖口里轻轻蜷着，像怕冷的小鸟收拢了翅膀。陈大同脱下自己的外套披在她身上，那衣服有干草和阳光的味道，暖暖的。他看到婉芹的伤，很心疼。
村里有个老巫婆，姓刘，人人都叫她刘婆。她年轻时男人出去打工就没回来过，也不知道是死是活。她一个人拉扯大了一个闺女，闺女脑子不太好，三十好几了还不会做饭，只会坐在门口纳鞋底。刘婆心里急，总想着给她闺女找个好婆家。她看上了陈大同。陈大同是村里最有出息的年轻人，会种地，会木工，还会认几个字，十里八村找不到第二个。刘婆盘算着，把闺女嫁给他，后半辈子就有了着落。刘婆想把她的女儿嫁给陈大同。
可她很快就发现了陈大同的眼睛，总是粘在婉芹身上。婉芹去挑水，他在井边等。婉芹去赶集，他推着板车“顺路”。婉芹在自留地里浇菜，他扛着锄头绕过来，说是看看地里结黄瓜了没，眼睛却一眼都不往地里看。刘婆看在眼里，恨在心上，吐出来的唾沫星子都带了毒。她开始在村里散话，专门挑人多的地方说。在井台边说，在老槐树下说，在碾盘边说——说婉芹命硬，克死了亲娘，现在又来克陈大同。爱嚼舌根的刘婆到处说婉芹坏话。

婉芹正蹲在院子里洗衣服，手泡在凉水里，冻得通红。他走过去，把她的手从水里捞出来，握在手心里，冰得像攥了两根从河里刚捞上来的冰凌子。“你以后别听那些闲话。”婉芹没说话，她把手抽了回去，继续搓衣裳。他也不走，就在旁边蹲着，看她的手在搓衣板上一下一下地搓。两个人都没说话，大铁锅里蒸着红薯，咕嘟咕嘟冒泡，揭开的锅盖斜搭在灶沿上，白白的热气薰着墙上贴着的“小心灯火”几个字若隐若现。
