走到昆明北郊黑龙潭，多数游客只顾着赏古梅、看潭水、逛龙泉观，很少有人会特意绕到潭边那座不起眼的圆冢跟前驻足。这片草木环绕的土坟，埋着一户四百年前不肯向乱世低头的人家，一户选择一同沉入潭底、以性命守住内心底线的普通人。很多本地长辈从小听家里老人讲过这段往事，外地游客却大多一无所知，这段藏在昆明公园里的悲壮过往，读懂之后很难不心生感慨。
故事的主人公薛尔望，本名薛大观，祖辈从江南无锡迁来云南，扎根昆明几代人。他算不上朝堂上的大人物，仅仅是当地一名秀才，平日住在城郊，读书耕读，不攀附权贵，待人重信义，街坊邻里都知道他骨子里认死理，把是非和气节看得比身家性命重得多。明朝末年天下大乱，中原大地早已战火纷飞，偏居西南的云南一度还算安稳，薛尔望原本只想守着家人，安稳度日，谁也没料到，乱世的祸事终究还是追到了昆明。
崇祯皇帝自缢、明朝中枢崩塌之后，南明政权在南方苦苦支撑，永历帝朱由榔一路退守，最后落脚昆明，把这里当成临时都城。彼时民间还有不少百姓心存念想，觉得只要君王尚在，大明就还有喘息翻盘的机会，薛尔望也是其中之一。他守着黑龙潭旁的居所，每日留心时局变化，盼着能有机会稳住西南疆土，可局势恶化的速度远超所有人想象。
顺治十五年，吴三桂率领清军大举攻入云南，一路势如破竹，直逼昆明城门。兵临城下的消息传开，城内人心惶惶，身居皇宫的永历帝没有选择组织军民守城抵抗，而是收拾行装，带着亲信连夜逃往缅甸，打算躲到异国他乡苟活。这件事彻底击碎了薛尔望心中最后一点期待，听闻君王弃城出逃的消息，他独自站在潭边沉默许久，口中发出一声长叹。在他信奉的处世道理里，一国之君本该与城池、百姓共存亡，如今抛下故土远走他乡，让城中百姓独自面对改朝换代的变局，实在难以接受。
清军入城之后，一系列新规随之推行，百姓必须改换服饰、剃去头发，从前明人的穿戴、礼俗全都要推翻。不少当地士绅做出了不同选择，有人权衡利弊之后主动归顺清廷，继续保有家业；有人收拾行囊躲进深山，只求安稳活下去；也有手握实权的官员早早投降，转头为清军办事。薛尔望看着身边人的种种选择，心里始终无法说服自己低头，在他的认知里，世代生长在大明国土，读着大明典籍长大，若是改换身份侍奉新朝，便是丢掉了立身的根本。
他没有冲动独自赴死，而是回到家中，把妻儿、儿媳、女儿、孙辈还有常年伺候自家的侍女全部召集到一处，平静地讲清当下的时局，说出自己心中的决定。他告诉家人，自己不愿做归顺新朝的百姓，打算以死明心中志向，若是有人想要保全性命，大可自行离开，不必跟着自己一同赴难。原本以为家中会有人心生畏惧、想要退缩，可在场所有人听完之后，没有一人提出要独自求生。
薛尔望的母亲杨氏率先开口，说儿子儿媳愿意为心中道义赴死，自己身为长辈，自然也不能落后。儿媳孟氏紧紧牵着年幼的孩子，表示一家人无论生死都要相守，不愿分开苟活。两个女儿也表态，不愿独自留在世间，看着周遭一切改换模样。贴身侍女兰馨抱着年幼的孙儿询问，主人一家若都离去，自己孤身一人留在世上没有依靠，也愿意一同随行。就连家中饲养的猫狗，后来也跟着众人一同跃入潭水，成了这段往事里格外让人唏嘘的细节。
一家人没有痛哭哀嚎，反倒收拾整齐身上的明代衣衫，一同前往平日常去散心的龙泉观亭台。薛尔望备好简单酒菜，一家人围坐在一起饮酒闲谈，他提笔在亭壁写下文字，字句直白坦荡，只想做坚守气节的亡魂，不愿做苟且偷生之人。席间他写下抒发心境的诗文，只是年代久远，那些笔墨没能留存到今天，只留下后人转述的只言片语，能窥见他当时满心的悲愤与决绝。
酒宴结束，众人相互道别，依次走向幽深的黑龙潭潭边。潭水深不见底，常年积着冷水，平日里当地人都不敢轻易靠近深处。薛尔望率先带着妻子纵身入水，随后家中子女、儿媳、孙辈、侍女紧随其后，一户人家十余口人，前后相继沉入潭中，没有一人迟疑后退。

几日之后，龙泉观里的道士路过潭边，发现水面漂浮起多具遗体，打捞上来时，所有人面容依旧安详，没有扭曲挣扎的模样，道士心中大为震动，知道这是薛尔望一家。周边乡民听闻消息纷纷赶来，看着一潭寒水，再看这满门忠烈，心里满是惋惜与敬重，大家一同出力，把薛家所有人的尸骨收拢，就近合葬在黑龙潭旁的空地上，没有分开设冢，让一家人死后依旧相守在一起，这座合葬墓，就此留存至今。
很多人会疑惑，薛家是誓死对抗清廷的前朝遗民，为什么后来清朝官府不仅没有毁掉这座坟墓，反倒多次出资修缮、立碑题字，甚至准许地方官府每年定期祭祀。这里藏着很朴素的道理，古代历朝统治者都推崇忠义二字，哪怕这份忠义献给前朝，官方也愿意公开褒扬，用来教化百姓懂得坚守本心、心怀底线。康熙年间，昆明知县主动上书朝廷，请求允许当地百姓祭拜薛尔望，这份请求顺利得到准许。到了道光年间，负责云南文教的官员专程为墓园撰写墓表，亲手题写墓碑文字，如今墓碑上 “明忠义薛尔望先生阖眷之墓” 十二个大字，依旧清晰可辨。
