“dead heat”怎么理解？
heat 作名词表示“热、高温”，但“dead heat”真不是“热死了”。
实际上，dead heat 表示的是在赛跑或比赛中胜负不分的结果。可以翻译为“旗鼓相当，不相上下”：

The race ended in a dead heat.
赛跑最终不分胜负。
The opinion polls show the three election candidates in a dead heat (with each other).
民意调查显示3位候选人难分高下。
dead heat 是一个来源于赛马比赛的表达。过去在赛马中，heat 指预赛，跟“热、高温”没有一点关系。
如果在预赛中有两匹马同时经过终点则是平局，这样的结果是不采用的，即 dead废弃的。而两匹马同时到达终点，也意味着这两匹马不相伯仲，所以这个短语也常用来表示棋逢对手、不分胜负。
在18世纪后期开始使用 dead heat 表示比赛“平局，不分胜负”了，后来逐渐就广泛应用于任何平局比赛中。
