Suddenly, warm breezes arrive, heralding the coming of Minor Heat (Xiǎoshǔ). Today marks the beginning of Minor Heat, officially announcing the start of the late summer season—a time to emphasize health preservation.
01 Minor Heat Focus: Nurturing the Heart
Due to weather conditions during Minor Heat, blood pressure can fluctuate. While lying in bed or squatting, blood pressure remains relatively stable. However, standing up too quickly can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure to the head, potentially harming the body. Therefore, when getting out of bed or rising from a squat, avoid rushing. It's best to move your limbs first—no need for long, just about half a minute—before slowly standing up.
02 Emotional Wellness: Maintain a Peaceful Mindset
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that calming the mind and soothing emotions can relieve tension, promote a cheerful mood, and harmonize Qi and blood. This not only benefits heart function but also aligns with the principle of "nourishing yang in spring and summer." Hence, the ideal approach to summer health preservation is cultivating "heart tranquility"—a calm mind brings natural coolness.
03 Exercise Regimen: Less Movement, More Stillness
Minor Heat health preservation advocates "less vigorous movement, more stillness." This is especially important for the elderly, children, and those with weaker constitutions, who should avoid strenuous exercise during this period to minimize the depletion of vital energy (yang qi). Instead, opt for gentle, low-intensity activities like Tai Chi, walking, or light jogging during the cooler hours of early morning or evening.
04 Dietary Health: Balanced Eating
Minor Heat falls within the "Long Summer" period, characterized by declining yang heat and rising dampness. This dampness can easily impair the spleen and stomach. Therefore, focus on clearing heat, relieving summer heat, fortifying the spleen, and draining dampness. The diet should emphasize light, nourishing foods; reduce intake of spicy and greasy foods.
