The Everlasting Regret (Excerpt)
by Bai Juyi / Tr. Wang Yongli
Seventh moon, seventh day, Longevity Hall’s quiet bower,
Midnight, no soul around, their secret vowdid flower.

On mortal earth, twined branches clingthrough every weather.
Heaven and earth, though long, shall reachtheir final bound;
This endless sorrow stretches on, no end tofound.

From then on, parted by the insurmountable divide between heavenand earth, Emperor Xuanzong was left with nothing but endless remembrance forthe rest of his days.
