Week 11|Asking Is the Beginning of Intelligence

A Good Question Opens a Door

A good question is not a sign that you are weak. It is often the first sign that your mind is awake.

Many students are afraid to ask questions. They worry that the question may sound simple. They worry that others have already understood. They worry that the teacher may think they were not listening carefully. So they keep the question inside, and the unclear place remains unclear.

Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, is remembered not because he gave quick answers to everything, but because he asked questions carefully. Britannica explains that the Socratic method works through a series of questions, often helping people see whether their answers truly fit together. Socrates presented himself not as a person who already knew everything, but as someone who kept inquiring.

This is useful for study. When you ask, “Why is this step necessary?” you are not making trouble. You are looking for structure. When you ask, “Is there another way to solve this?” you are not wasting time. You are opening a second path. When you ask, “What exactly do I not understand?” you are already closer to understanding.

Of course, asking well also needs practice. A good question is not just “I don’t get it.” Try to make it clearer: “I understand the first step, but I do not understand why the second step follows.” Or, “I know the meaning of the words, but I cannot see the logic of the sentence.” The clearer your question is, the easier it is for others to help you, and the easier it is for you to help yourself.

This week, ask one real question in class or after class. It does not need to be brilliant. It only needs to be honest and specific. A question is not an empty space in your mind. It is a door waiting to be opened.

Source Notes

The Socrates example is based on Britannica’s description of the Socratic method as a form of inquiry developed from Socrates’ questioning in Plato’s dialogues. Britannica explains that the method uses questions to test whether answers fit together and that Socrates often presents himself as an inquirer rather than as a teacher with ready-made answers.
