By the Western Stream at Chuzhou
by Wei Yingwu
Tr. by Wang Yongli
I love the quiet grass along the rill,
From shadowed woods where orioles pour their thrill.
At dusk, spring rain and tide impel the stream withspeed;
A boat adrift athwart the ferry, none to heed.

To Councillor Qiu the Twenty-Second on an Autumn Night
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
This autumn night belongs to longing thee;
I stroll and chant beneath cool sky free.
Pine nuts drop on empty hills far away—
My quiet friend must still lie awake today.
Letter to the Taoist Hermit in Quanjiao Hills
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
My study’scold this morning, clear and bleak;
I think of the hermit who dwells on the peak.
He gathers thorn faggots down by the rill,
Boils white stone on his hearth when he climbs uphill.
I’dbear a gourd of wine through wind and rain,
To soothe his lone dusk far o’er the plain.
But fallen leaves bury the empty hill wide—
Where shall I trace his wandering stride?
Solitary Dwelling
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
High rank or low folk, when out they stray,
All chase worldly gains through every day.
I alone stand free from mortal tie,
To live in seclusion where calm draws nigh.
Light rain slipped by in the midnight haze;
I knew not spring grass grew through quiet days.
Green hills blush dawn light all sudden and mild;
Sparrows wheel round my cottage and wild.
Sometimes I walk with a Taoist sage,
Or trudge with woodcutters over the stage.
Content with my humble weak lot I stand—
Who deems trivial glory the whole of man’s land?
The Eastern Suburb
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Trapped in official hallsthe whole long year;
I step to suburbs at cleardawn’s cheer.
Willows breathe soft windwith tender grace;
Green hills melt all myweary care and base.
I lean on thicket, rest myweary breast,
Wander along brook, thenonward pressed.
Light misty rain veils thefragrant lea;
Where does springturtle-dove chant free?
My heart craves quiet, yetduty calls fast;
Bound to my post, my stepshurry past.
Someday I’ll quit office, build hut below—
To match Tao Qian’s peace, my deepest vow.

Lodging Alone in Autumn Study with Baozi
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Hill moon glows bright as a candle’s flame;
Wind and frost stir bamboo, soft yet the same.
Midnight scares birds from their leafy nest;
Alone by the window I lie at rest.
Rustic Abode
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Since youth I’vedeclined official post,
My nature loose, no courtly boast.
Now freed from magistrate’sheavy load;
Free from worldly greed’stormenting goad.
My cottage hides in a remote glen;
No hasty feasts for idle men.
I chase hares up the sloping mound,
Fish red brooks where clear waters bound.
Loud songs keep my bold spirit alive;
Borrowed wine suits my poor humble hive.
Oft I unlatch the north window pane—
Nor let dull scrolls my true joy restrain.

Delight at Qiang’s Night Visit to Yongding Temple
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Thou hast new-year bliss to claim and hold,
Yet trudge through bitter cold to this fold.
Thou knock’stthe bamboo temple gate by night,
Snow cloaks thy robes from mountain height.
Our stove blazes warm with steady fire;
We shut the bare study, calm desire.
We share one wine jar, silent side by side—
All vexing worldly cares lay aside.

To Monk Shen, While Listening to Jialing River
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Cliffs carved to let wild torrents race;
This marks old Yu the god’sfamed trace.
All night the din shakes mountain inn’s hall;
I rest alone, no peace at all.
Water’strue essence still and mild,
Stones hold no sound, silent and wild.
When wave and rock collide and clash,
Thunder roars through empty mountain hush.
I send this verse to my old monk friend,
That man and nature’sbond may comprehend.

Visiting Kaiyuan Hermitage I
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Pure verses fill our dawn and dusk hour,
Companions beneath eastern wood’s bower.
Thou dwell’stalone, aging on hill’scold ground;
We meet post-snow, chant poems unbound.
Rain fades, thin mist melts out of sight;
Spring fountain murmurs deep in night.
One simple meal frees flesh from strain;
Who knows my heart beyond mortal gain?

Visiting Kaiyuan Hermitage II
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Light summer robes ease my tired frame;
I wander, fond of this monk’s calm claim.
New rain bathes fruit groves, fresh and sweet;

Lonely blooms bear spring’slast faint powers.
Official tokens bind my weary soul,
Thus seldom I stray to this tranquil bowl.

West Sai Mountain

Meeting Xu the Eleventh in His Cottage on Moonlit Night
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)

My bare study bears no worldly chore;
Loose my headcloth, I greet friend of yore.
Young moon unlocks autumn’svast sky dome;

Awaiting Friends at Shanfu Hermitage on an Autumn Night
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
I stroll alone in wide courtyard space,
Night spreads its calm, unruffled grace.
Red pavilion meets the moon’s bright trail;
Thin mist curls up from gilded pond pale.
Clear bell notes drift through empty vale;
Faint flame glimmers the cold night veil.
Those I long for stay far out of sight;
I sit forlorn, another whole year’s night.

To Magistrate Cui, Solitary Night in Temple Dwelling
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Quiet recluse, wakeful, hushed and lone;
Countless dry leaves drift downward, one by one.
Cold rain dims the midnight hour’s dark haze;
Fireflies glide past the pavilion’s raise.
I sit till green lamp greets dawn’s faint glow,
Grieving old vows for my hometown slope.
Who understands this heavy heart’s cry?
Only pine trees and cranes stand nigh.
To My Younger Brothers in Leisure Retreat
By Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Autumn grass creeps o’ercourt with white dew spread;
My brothers at home fill my longing head.
Whole day my lofty study holds no task;
I write lone verses on banana frond’s mask.
