Ever since I was small I have carried one clear picture in my head: my grandmother sitting with a ledger open, a pencil tucked behind her ear, working through the day's sums. This morning, standing in the kitchen of our old Liangzhou house, I watched her do it again. And it hit me: a Liangzhou household does not just live, it accounts. When uncles once divided the family estate, elders were called in to list the grain, the cash, the tools, the debts, line by line, so fairness would leave a paper trail. We have always known a home runs on numbers as much as on affection.

The strange thing is how early this starts. A child in our lane learns the weight of a coin before she learns to read a banknote's face. My grandmother never called it finance; she called it "having one's accounts clear before the sun sets." That single sentence held a whole philosophy: you do not wait for the month to end to wonder where the money went. You watch it, daily, the way you watch the weather.

A household, I have come to think, is less about shared blood than about shared rounds: the laundry, the groceries, the small repairs, and now the ledger. The Western Jin writer Lu Bao, centuries ago, even wrote an ode to coin, calling it "Kongfang, the square-holed brother" who "flies without wings and walks without feet." He meant it as satire, but the point lands right here too: money is the breath of a household. What he saw, long before economics had a name, is that coin is not a thing you bury; it is a current you steer. A family that lets it pool and stagnate grows poor in spirit as well as in coin. My own rule now is three small habits: record every spend the same day, keep the receipt, and sort it into pots. I used to let it slide; now the ledger is the first thing I close the day with.

My grandmother's family, back in Qing times, ran a small shop of their own in old Liangzhou, and every deal they struck was set down on a contract. The habit of writing things down was never a modern fad here; it ran through the whole town, merchant and farmer alike, for generations. A paper trail was how trust travelled.

I find it odd, now, that schools teach algebra before they teach a household. We can solve for x at twelve and still be bankrupt at thirty. The one skill that actually steadies a life, the quiet arithmetic of in and out, gets left to chance, to parents who may never have learned it either. My grandmother had no degree, yet her ledger balanced to the fen.

Here is the thing I keep circling back to: good spending is not the opposite of managing money, it is the thing itself. A household that tells need from want, that waits out an impulse, that refuses to hoard junk, is already guarding its own root. The ledger only works if the outflow stays sane, so the real skill was never a clever investment but the small daily choice not to leak. The leak is almost never the big purchase; it is the hundred small yeses, the thing grabbed on the way out, the subscription nobody cancelled, the coffee that became a habit. Economists even name it the latte factor, but my grandmother simply called it "the money that walks out without you noticing." Same wound, different century.

Here is the sharper edge of that idea, the part that turns a ledger into a life. Every time I reach for my wallet I now ask one question: does this thing put money into my pocket, or pull it out? That single question splits the world into assets and liabilities. An asset is anything that sends cash my way, a course that lifts my skills, a good chair that keeps my back at work, even a small index fund that drips a little passive income. A liability is the opposite, the thing that keeps costing once you own it, the showy buy that drains the purse long after the thrill is gone. The old trap is calling a status purchase an asset when it is really a leak. So I flipped the order: the moment pay lands, I buy an asset first, and only then do I spend. Let the money work before it gets spent, that is the whole game.

But there is a darker twin to that idea, and I have to name it: leverage. Leverage means borrowing to invest or to spend, and it magnifies the gain and the loss at once. If the market slips, a thirty percent drop can swallow the whole down payment and leave you owing the bank besides. Worse, a borrowed position demands a steady stream of repayment; one job loss or one sickness and the cushion is gone, the credit score with it. The weight on the chest alone can bend a person's judgement, and the world outside, the market, the policy, the trade, never asks your leave before it turns. I have seen neighbours who borrowed against a rising price, sure the rise would never end, and woke to a debt larger than the thing they bought. Leverage is a tool, not a talisman; handled lazily, it burns the hand that holds it. So my own line stays plain: let money breed money on coin you already hold, keep a fund for the rainy day, and reach for borrowed money only when the use is real and the repayment is sure.

The rainy-day fund deserves its own line. Before any coin is "put to work," a cushion of three to six months of living cost must sit untouched, dull and unproductive on purpose. It is the difference between a setback and a ruin. My grandmother kept a jar she never opened except for the unforeseen; she called it "the money that waits." Modern finance calls it an emergency buffer. Same jar, same wisdom, a century apart.

What I love is that this topic is not abstract. When I describe my family in English I reach for close-knit, or my grandmother holds it all together. And the harder truth, the one the chart can show, is that the caring and the counting inside a home fall unevenly, women doing far more of both. The chart below counts the minutes; it cannot count the love, yet it counts enough to make the point: a household's first economy is the work no one invoices, and its second is the ledger that keeps the rest honest. That is the part textbooks skip.

收尾一句:a family is a set of small daily rounds and an honest ledger, not a slogan.

The leak in my 地道 score this week is collocation again, now in a family frame. Chinese says "做家务" or "照顾家人", but English does not translate those word for word. It stores a fixed set, and that set is what natives actually reach for. A few I drilled this morning:

• do the housework / help around the house — not "make housework", which sounds like you are manufacturing it.

• take care of the kids / look after the elderly — not "care my family"; care needs of or for.

• share the chores / split the housework — chip in sits inside this family of phrases.

• run a household — the verb run, the one you use for a business, also runs a home.

• pull your weight — each person carries their share of the load.

Get the collocation right and the sentence sounds alive; get it wrong and even a big word gives you away. 地道, as ever, hides in the small joints between words, never in the dictionary definition alone.

上面这几组,中文都没有一一对应的直译:housework 配 do 不配 make,care 要接 of/for,run 既能管公司也能管家。

A few pitfalls I keep tumbling into, and the native fix for each. The wrong version reads fine inside a Chinese head, but a native ear always hears the seam:

❌ 中式英语 make housework

✅ 地道表达 do the housework / help around the house

I care my family

I take care of my family / I look after them

✅ 地道表达 support a family / be the breadwinner

❌ 中式英语 divide the housework

✅ 地道表达 share the chores / split the housework

❌ 中式英语 my family is very harmonious

✅ 地道表达 we get along well / we are close-knit

I very love my family

✅ 地道表达 family comes first for me / I'm family-oriented

• housework → chores / domestic work

• take care of → look after / tend to

• help → lend a hand / chip in

• busy → tied up / swamped

• important → central / at the heart of

• get along → be on good terms / click

这些替换在口语里比原词更地道:chores 比 housework 口语,chip in 比 help 多了"搭把手"的温度,at the heart of 比 important 有层次。

The house is the first economy

Before there was a market, there was a household, and the word for the one still carries the other inside it. Economy comes from the Greek oikos, a house, and nomos, management or law, so that oikonomia once meant simply the running of a home. The family, in this old sense, was the original unit of both production and care: it fed, clothed, and taught its own, and only later did those tasks leak out into shops and schools. Kinship, from Old English cynn, is the web that bound that unit together; nurture, from Latin nutrire, is the quiet work of keeping it alive. What we call the informal economy is, in truth, mostly the household wearing a different name.

And the question of who does the caring inside that unit is one Liangzhou answered long before GDP was invented, in the rhythm of its own close-knit homes.

词源小知识:economy = Greek oikos(房屋)+ nomos(管理)→ 原义就是"治家";family 来自 Latin familia,与 famulus( household servant,家仆)同根,本指"一家人连同仆从";kin 来自 Old English cynn(家族);nurture 来自 Latin nutrire(滋养)。

Roots are the shortest path back to a word's bones; four met the family today:

• domus(房屋):domestic(今日新词,家庭的),domain(领地,原指家产),dome(穹顶,形如屋宇)。

• famulus / familia(家仆/全家):family(今日新词),familiar(熟悉的,因常在家才熟),famulus。

• nutrire(滋养):nurture(今日新词),nutrition(营养),nutrient(养分)。

• cynn / kin(家族):kinship(今日新词),kindred(亲族),kin。

Today's topic is family, so it is a good day to pull old words back through the home.

• 2026-09-30, work. wear many hats and call it a day came back. I drilled them on the naturalness dimension in an office frame; today, on the same axis, I pulled wear many hats into a household, where everyone cooks, cleans and earns at once.

• 2026-10-03, transport. catch the bus and off-peak returned. Running errands for the family is exactly when you catch the bus off-peak to beat the rush, one word, two scenes met.

• 2026-10-01, health. nurture and resilience moved into a care frame that day; today the same nurture sits inside the family essay, old root, new home.

• 2026-09-06, family. The first family run this season taught household and kinship plainly; today those same roots grew branches, domestic and matriarch.

• 2026-09-30, work. I should catch myself before "make housework" slips out again, a blind spot from that run.

Old words are never learned alone; only when you tie them into a fresh scene do they truly stick.

1. Who does most of the housework in your family?

2. What do you and your family do together at weekends?

3. Do you think chores should be shared equally between men and women? Why?

Focus word: household ˈhaʊshəʊld. My loose native-style guess runs something like "house-old", but the strict RP is ˈhaʊshəʊld. The first syllable ˈhaʊs carries the stress, and the final -hold is said as one breath with no break, həʊld not "hole-d". Between house and hold there is a soft glide on the s-h join, almost a whispered link; say it twice and the word lands as a single unit. A small thing, but said right it sounds like you have actually heard the word spoken, not just read it.

Spanish of the day: La casa es la primera escuela. "The home is the first school."

Source: ILO (Charmes, J. 2019), The Unpaid Care Work and the Labour Market: an analysis of time-use data based on the latest World Compilation of Time-use Surveys. International Labour Office, Geneva. Minutes per day spent on unpaid care work, by region and sex, 2019.

Write a report of at least 150 words in 20 minutes. Your report should include an overview and key features. Compare women and men, and make reference to the widest and narrowest gaps.

1. Across all regions, women spent substantially more minutes per day on unpaid care work than men.

2. Latin America recorded the largest gap, with women at 371 minutes against men at just 130.

3. South Asia showed the most uneven split, where women (296 minutes) did roughly nine times the care work of men (33 minutes).

4. North America posted the narrowest gap, yet women (263) still outdid men (168) by a clear margin.

• Overall: women shouldered the bulk of unpaid care work in every region, with the world average at 272 minutes a day for women versus 84 for men.

• Detail: the gap was widest in Latin America and South Asia, where women's care time was several times that of men; it was narrowest in North America, though still tilted to women.

• Conclusion: no region came close to an even split, a pattern that holds regardless of income level.

今天重点练两件事:差距与倍数(gap/the widest gap/N times as much)和极差(range,最短的 South-East Asia 208 到最长的 Latin America 371)。

At the foot of 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), a peak of the Qilian range some thirteen kilometres from the old city, the old houses of Liangzhou still keep a habit that surprises outsiders: they write things down. When brothers divide a household, elders are invited to list the grain, the cash, the tools and the debts, line by line, so fairness leaves a paper trail. A family here has always been more than blood; it is a working unit that cooks, trades, herds and accounts together, and that unit is exactly what the word economy once meant, the running of a home.

Money itself, the Liangzhou people learned early, is the breath of such a unit. The Western Jin writer Lu Bao penned the Discourse on the God of Money, calling coin "Kongfang, the square-holed brother" who "flies without wings and walks without feet." His satire aimed at a corrupt age, yet the lens fits Liangzhou too: along the Silk Road, cash was the blood of the city. The Former Liang court at Guzang even struck its own coin, the "Liangzao Xinquan", a coin of the Former Liang state, minted on Liangzhou soil.

Liangzhou studies teach fusion, and the hardest proof of it sits not in a book but in a graveyard. In the southern hills of Liangzhou lie the tombs of the Tuyuhun royal clan, the Yanghuigu burial ground, where Princess Hongua was laid to rest and nine epitaphs, painted wooden figures, silk textiles and a pipa lute came out of the earth. A people from the far northeast, having settled in the Hexi corridor, buried their princess at the edge of Liangzhou city, neighbours to Han officials, Sogdian merchants and monks from the west. This is the enlarged meaning of family and of trade: not one blood makes a household, but one stretch of land where daily life is shared and goods change hands. The old Liangzhou kept a temple of letters beside a temple of war, civil and martial together; to keep accounts and to know trade was one and the same as to read the sages. The Liangzhou people saw through this long ago.

The Liangzhou mind never split learning from livelihood. What I call the study of "weights and measures" holds that a culture's survival rides on its economy, that scholarship must pay its own way or it withers. And the city itself proves it: the old walls of Guzang ran its lanes and canals in an order no different from the great Central Plain capitals, a form shaped by both earth and hands. To read Liangzhou without its city form is to miss the bone under the skin.

From 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) you see it. The walls are gone, but the lesson is not: a home runs on whoever is willing to pull their weight, a city runs on the same quiet rule, and the coin that links them was struck right here in Guzang, disputed name and all. The care work that keeps a household alive was never counted in any ledger, yet it is the first economy of them all.

And the Liangzhou lesson reaches further still: a household that learns to tell an asset from a liability, that buys what fills the purse and shuns what drains it, is already practising the oldest finance there is.

The warning against loose spending is no modern idea in Liangzhou. Around 1745, Ouyang Yongqi (courtesy name Dexin, art name Lanqi), a Qing prefect of Liangzhou, saw the very trap this push names. He found families rich and poor alike burning their means on show: ten-day wedding feasts, hired opera troupes at funerals, tables piled high before the wine was even poured. The rich set the pace, the poor strained to keep up, and eight or nine of every ten homes slid into want. So he drafted the Treaty on Honouring Frugality and had it cut into stone; the stele is lost, but the full text was later preserved in the Qianlong-era gazetteer Wuliang Kaozhi Liude Ji Quanzhi (《五凉考治六德集全志》). The treaty ran three plain rules. First, keep the funeral frugal: a sturdy coffin was enough, no family below the middle rank was to bankrupt itself for a burial, and no hired opera troupes wailing at the rites. Second, trim the wedding: a modest table for the guests, no flaunting of the dowry, no long procession of loaded tables. Third, spare the feast: meat and vegetables in balance, the spread matched to the host's means, and no gambling at the gathering, for he wrote that "to gamble for merriment must be cut out above all" (设赌为欢,尤宜切戒). He traced the rot to the rich who set the tone and the rest who strained to follow: a fair show today, hunger tomorrow Beyond the treaty he opened granaries, settled a water dispute with the garrison, and built academies, and later ages counted him among the upright Qing officials. A magistrate who governed by telling people to spend less, not more, was a man who understood the household ledger. And his wisdom still walks the lanes of Liangzhou today, two hundred years on, quietly telling each household that thrift is not misery but freedom.

And here is the part I most want to praise: the Liangzhou people have carried, for generations, a financial wisdom the textbooks never write down. They never treated coin as something to hoard in a jar; they treated it as a worker. To keep a ledger is only the first step; the deeper genius is to let money breed money, to turn a surplus into a shop, a flock, a contract, a caravan toll, so that one coin sets two more in motion. From the Sogdian stalls that lined the corridor to the small contract-bound shop my grandmother's family ran in Qing-era Liangzhou, the unspoken rule was ruthless and sound: a coin that only sits is a coin half dead. Put it to work, and it feeds the next generation. This is the spirit I mean to carry forward, my own quiet rallying cry for the place I come from: 让凉州再次伟大, to make Liangzhou great again, not through slogans but through the oldest craft of all, compound wealth in the hands of people who know its true weight.
