Looking at the information in more detail, the overall populationgrew marginallyfrom 4,381,269 in 2011 to 4,410,284 in 2012,representing an increase of0.6%.The same trend could be seen inthe age group of 40-to-64,with the figure risingfrom 1,331,907 to 1,339,898 over the same period.A much more pronounced growth was seenamongthose aged 65 and over, whose populationgrew by4%,reaching596,903 in 2012.

However,the two younger age groupsexhibited slight declinesin population.Althoughthe 15-39-year-oldsconstituted the largest age groupin both years, their numberfell slightlyfrom 1,577,256 in 2011 to 1,574,102 in 2012,a drop of0.2%.Similarly,there was a decline of0.2% in the number ofunder-15s, from 898,160 in 2011 to 896,364 one year later.
