Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen Gives Exclusive Interview to China Shipping Gazette President in Hamburg, Germany
On October 14, local time in Germany, Chen Hongbing, President and Editor-in-Chief of China Shipping Gazette (CSG), visited Hapag-Lloyd’s global headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, for an exclusive interview with Rolf Habben Jansen, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd.
The global container shipping market continues to face multiple challenges, including shifts in capacity supply and demand, freight-rate cycles and uncertainty surrounding key waterways. At the same time, terminal and inland logistics networks, liner cooperation, the green and low-carbon transition, and supply chain resilience are rapidly reshaping the strategies and competitive landscape of liner shipping companies.
During the interview, Chen Hongbing exchanged views with Rolf Habben Jansen on Hapag-Lloyd’s continued investment in global terminal assets, the strengthening of its end-to-end capabilities, and whether the company may further expand into inland logistics and freight forwarding. They also discussed the medium- and long-term development of the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, as well as how to maintain service quality amid excess capacity and freight-rate cycles.
They also discussed shipping decarbonisation, Hapag-Lloyd’s goal of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045, methanol dual-fuel vessels, the Ship Green sustainable shipping product, and how decarbonisation costs could be reasonably shared between carriers and cargo owners. Rolf Habben Jansen also shared his observations and perspectives on uncertainty surrounding key waterways, the fragmentation and regionalisation of global supply chains, supply chain resilience, and the role of key hubs and waterways.
As more Chinese manufacturers accelerate their global expansion, international logistics demand is extending beyond finished products to components and raw materials used in production, while Chinese cargo owners are gaining greater decision-making influence in the international logistics market. Hapag-Lloyd’s plans and strategy for the Chinese market, the latest developments regarding its agreement to acquire ZIM and how the transaction relates to the quality ambitions of Strategy 2030, as well as the increasingly blurred boundaries among ports, liner shipping companies and freight forwarders, were also important topics of the interview.
Before the interview, Chen Hongbing introduced Rolf Habben Jansen to China Shipping Gazette’s professional communications and resource services in shipping, ports, logistics and international supply chains. He also briefed him on preparations for the 5th International Supply Chain Logistics Exposition (ISL Expo 2027), to be held in Shanghai from April 21 to 23, 2027.
