Kettle on, tea steeping, and the chart waiting on my screen: paired columns of adult literacy by region, then and now. Europe and Northern America top the list at 98.7 per cent, Eastern and South-Eastern Asia sit just behind at 96.7, and the world average has climbed from 82.4 to 87.4 across the three decades between the two survey periods (UNESCO Institute for Statistics, SDG 4.6.2, adult literacy rate 15+, 1995 to 2004 and 2015 to 2024). On the surface it is a chart about the most basic floor a school can build: reading and writing. But it pushed a question up one storey higher. When I finish a page, do I actually know whether I understood it?
The gap in the chart is wide, 98.7 at the top against 67.0 at the bottom, and the lowest two regions, Sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania, still sit under seventy (UNESCO UIS, same source and periods). Progress is real: Central and Southern Asia added more than thirteen percentage points, the largest rise anywhere on the chart. Yet the reason I kept staring was quieter. UNESCO defines a literate person as someone who can read and write a short simple statement about their everyday life, and a good share of the world's literacy data is self-reported. People are asked to judge their own ability. And people, as every learner finds out the hard way, are generous judges of themselves.
There is a name for the skill that fixes this, and it is metacognition: knowing about your own knowing. It is the difference between a student who re-reads a page until it feels familiar and a student who closes the book and asks what can still be recalled without it. The first builds a comfortable illusion; the second builds a learner. My own study plan, Liangzhou studies plus a foreign language, runs without a teacher standing behind me, so the only quality control in the room is my own habit of noticing where I stall. That is why today's chart matters to me. It measures the floor, and honest self-checking has to start right there.
And I should say the uncomfortable part, because a journal that only records victories teaches nothing. Last month I finished a reading passage and felt fine about it, genuinely fine, warm even. Three days later, in a speaking test, I opened my mouth on the very first sentence and produced nothing. Not a wrong answer, which I could have corrected. Nothing. The passage had never entered my head; it had only entered my hands, and my hands had turned the pages. That gap between what felt like learning and what was learning is exactly the distance the chart measures in a country's literacy rate, and exactly the distance I had been walking around for years without noticing. Confucius solved it in six characters two and a half thousand years ago: 知之为知之, 不知为不知, 是知也, to know what you know and to own up to what you do not. I have been pretending the second half was optional. It is the whole exam.
Three knots I tied myself up in today, all of them worth untying before the exam. The first one is the sentence on the wall of every Chinese classroom I have ever sat in, and it is also a piece of grammar:
• 知之为知之, 不知为不知, 是知也: the classic A is A, B is B parallelism, with a deliberate switch of the same word's meaning at the end, where 是知也 turns 知 from "to know" into "to be wise" (知者智, 知通智). English has no such pun in one clause, so it has to spell it out: To know what you know is one thing; to admit what you do not know is what makes you wise.(同一个字在句末换义,中文靠这个字义转折把「知」推到「智」;英文必须拆成两句才传得准。)
• It is one thing to ..., quite another to ...: It is one thing to read a page, and quite another to know whether the page has left anything behind.(前半用 one thing,后半用 quite another,两半结构平行,中间 and 连接;这是 Task 2 教育类立论的高分骨架。
Whether a person can read is a question for the chart; whether that person knows they understood is a question for themselves.(whether 引导名词性从句放句首,谓语用单数 is;两个 whether 并排,正好把「会读」和「知道自己读懂没」拆成两问。)
• reflect on + 名词: I need time to reflect on where I stalled.(reflect 是不及物动词,反思某事必须加 on,写成 reflect my mistakes 是硬伤。)
• the + 比较级,the + 比较级: The more honestly you rate your own understanding, the faster you find the next gap.(前后两半结构对称,后半不省略主谓,语气里带着因果,元认知主题天然适配。)

Each entry carries its root and joins its word family; the Chinese gloss is only a rescue note:
• metacognition ˌmetəˈkɒɡnɪʃn n. awareness of one's own thinking(元认知): Greek meta (about, beyond) + Latin cognitio (a getting to know, from gnoscere, to know). Family: cognitive, recognise. The word literally means "knowing about knowing".
• retrieval rɪˈtriːvl n. the act of calling knowledge back to mind(提取、回想): re- (back) + Latin trahere (to draw). Family: tractor, abstract, retract. Retrieval practice means pulling knowledge out, not pushing it in again.
• comprehension ˌkɒmprɪˈhenʃn n. the act of grasping meaning(理解力): com- (together) + Latin prehendere (to grasp). Family: apprehend, comprehensive. To comprehend is to catch the meaning with your mind's hand.
• calibrate ˈkælɪbreɪt v. to adjust a judgment to match reality(校准): from French calibre (standard bore of a gun). Family: calibre. A learner who calibrates knows the true size of their own knowledge.
• monitor ˈmɒnɪtə v. to keep track of one's own progress(监测): Latin monere (to warn, advise). Family: admonish, monument, something built to remind. To monitor yourself is to be your own warning light.
• misconception ˌmɪskənˈsepʃn n. a firmly held wrong idea(错误观念): mis- (wrongly) + concept, from Latin con- + capere (to take). Family: capable, accept, intercept. A misconception is an idea taken in the wrong way, and it survives on confidence.
• self-regulated ˌselfˈreɡjuleɪtɪd adj. able to steer one's own learning(自我调节的): self + Latin regula (rule). Family: regulate, regular. Self-regulated learners write their own rules and follow them.
• reflect rɪˈflekt v. to bend back and examine one's own thinking(反思): re- (back) + Latin flectere (to bend). Family: flexible, reflection. Reflection is your thought bending back to look at itself.
It is one thing to sit in a classroom, and quite another to know what you carried out of it.(one thing ... quite another 结构,把「在场」与「所得」拆开,Task 2 教育类直接可用)
例:It is one thing to attend every lecture, and quite another to be able to explain the lecture to someone else.
What a country spends on schools says less about learning than about priorities.(2026-10-17 教育期学的读图价值句,今天反过来用:图表量的是投入,量不出自我校准。)
The gap between the highest and lowest regions exceeded thirty percentage points.(gap + exceed + percentage points,柱状图比差距的万能句,percentage points 别写成 percent。)
To know what you know, and to admit what you do not, is the whole of wisdom.(元认知的中文原句,Task 2 引一句即见深度;英文把「知」拆成 know 与 wise 两层,对应中文一字两义)
• a false sense of knowing:自以为懂的错觉。Skimming gives you a false sense of knowing.(元认知话题的核心短语,考场、背单词两处通用)
• know your blind spots:知道自己的盲区。A good learner maps their blind spots first.(练口语前先摸盲区,比先补强项划算)
Three more from the same source, worth carrying today: 敏而好学,不耻下问, a learner who is quick on the uptake and unafraid to ask anyone, however junior. 默而识之,学而不厌,诲人不倦, take it in silently, never tire of learning, never tire of teaching. 学如不及,犹恐失之, you are never quite finished, and you are never quite sure you have kept what you had.
• grasp:今日义「理解、领会」;另一常见义「用手抓住、抓紧」,如 grasp an idea 与 grasp a rope。
• register:今日义「被记住、留下印象」;另一常见义「登记、注册」,如 the warning finally registered 与 register for a course。
• gauge:今日义「判断、估量」;另一常见义「计量表、标准量规」,如 gauge your understanding 与 a fuel gauge。
• read:今日义「解读、判断(read a situation)」;另一常见义「阅读文字」,如 read between the lines 与 read a book。
Metacognition, the awareness of one's own thinking, is one of the youngest words in the study of learning and one of the oldest ideas in it. The term was coined in the 1970s by the American developmental psychologist John Flavell, who described it as cognition about cognition: noticing what you know, what you do not, and how well a task is going while you are still inside it (John H. Flavell, "Metacognition and cognitive monitoring", American Psychologist, 1979). Its most famous demonstration came two decades later, when Justin Kruger and David Dunning showed that the people who performed worst on tests of humour, grammar and logic were also the most likely to overestimate their own performance, precisely because the skill needed to answer correctly was the same skill needed to recognise a wrong answer (Kruger and Dunning, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1999). Confidence, in other words, is not evidence of competence, and the least skilled are the least equipped to see it.
The practical remedy is not more reading but retrieval. In a well-known classroom experiment, students who spent part of their study time answering questions from memory retained far more a week later than students who spent the same time re-reading the passage, even though the re-readers felt more confident beforehand (Roediger and Karpicke, Psychological Science, 2006). The feeling of familiarity and the fact of knowledge are two different measurements, and only the second one holds up a week later. Chinese tradition reached the same conclusion long before the laboratory, and reached it in a sharper form. 荀子 wrote that the noble-minded person learns broadly and examines himself daily, 君子博学而日参省乎己, which is metacognition in eleven characters, a daily audit of one's own understanding. The Analects put the other half even more plainly: 知之为知之, 不知为不知, 是知也, to know what you know and to own up to what you do not is itself to know. Two and a half thousand years before anyone plotted a curve, a reader was told that the honest line between knowing and not-knowing is where knowledge begins. Confucius was also suspicious of pure rumination: 吾尝终日不食, 终夜不寝, 以思, 无益, 不如学也, he once tried to work it out through a whole day without eating and a whole night without sleeping, and concluded that thinking alone buys nothing while study buys something. That is the laboratory's verdict too, in Confucius's own words 学而不思则罔, 思而不学则殆: reflection without input is only fatigue. The literacy chart above shows the world still working on the floor, the ability to read at all; the ceiling above it, knowing whether you understood, has no chart yet, and it is built one honest self-question at a time.
• metacognition: awareness and control of one's own thinking.
• calibrate: to check and adjust a measurement against a standard.
• overestimate: to judge something as greater than it really is.
• illusion: a false idea or belief that seems real. 点拨:a false sense of knowing 里的「错觉」就是它。
• retrieval: the process of getting information back from memory.
• zhuangyuan: the top-ranked candidate in the imperial palace examination. 点拨:中国科举殿试第一名,英文常译 first place; the sole Xixia holder of it was 遵顼, later emperor.
The Analects was not only read in Liangzhou, it was rewritten there in a second script.
A single city, two scripts, one classic. 斡道冲 translated the Analects for readers who could not read a single character of Chinese, and 1203 年廷试唱名第一的遵顼 later became the only emperor in Chinese history to hold the title of zhuangyuan. Both facts belong to the same place, and that place is the frontier town at the meeting of three plateaus.
One root pulls today's whole net: Latin gnoscere, to know. It gives cognition, the act of knowing; recognise, to know again; metacognition, to know about knowing; and even ignore, to refuse to know. Today's theme lives inside that one family, because the learner's real job is to move from knowing facts to recognising the edges of what they know.
The second net is flectere, to bend: reflect bends thought back on itself, flexible bends without breaking, and reflection in a mirror is light bending back to your eye. The third is prehendere, to grasp: comprehend catches meaning, apprehend catches a suspect, and comprehensive describes a test that tries to catch everything. And there is a fourth, older than the Latin, sitting in Chinese: 知, to know, which the Analects split in two. 知之为知之, 不知为不知, 是知也, and at the end of that sentence the same character quietly changes its job, from knowing to being wise, because 知通智. Confucius made the same distinction English makes with the ladder know, like, enjoy: 知之者不如好之者, 好之者不如乐之者, to know a thing is not as good as to love it, nor to love it as to take joy in it. And a fourth figure completes the family: I did not come into the world knowing, I merely love the old ways and work hard to seek them out. That sentence is the ancestor of every self-directed learner who ever sat down alone with a book.
Old knowledge resurfacing today, three callbacks, each one a word or a warning met before and kept alive.
From 2026-09-13, the very first weekly test, where fluency scored at the bottom of the scale and the note read that many words could not even be read aloud. That baseline is the honest zero metacognition asks for: before you improve, you have to know exactly where you stand.
From 2026-10-17, the education issue, the drill on 支出不等于学习, spending is not the same as learning. Today's chart is the same warning one level deeper: literacy is not the same as comprehension, and neither chart can measure whether the reader is checking themselves.
From 2026-10-22, the work issue, the root ferre, to carry, behind transfer. Skills transfer, and so does the habit of self-checking: the person who learned to notice their own stalls in English will notice them just as fast in Liangzhou studies, because the noticing itself is the portable part.

Ammo, not scripts. Part 1 style questions from the current pool, keywords only:
• Do you like studying? → yes, more than school ever made it look / studying how to study counts too / no teacher needed
• What subject did you like at school? → history, then language / geography opened the world / maths I respected but feared
• Are you good at remembering things? → names, badly / words, only in sentences / so I test myself instead of trusting memory
• Do you prefer to study alone or with others? → alone with books / a partner for languages / the mix keeps me honest
• How do you learn new things? → read once, then quiz myself / think out loud / note where I stall
• Do you think you are a good learner? → I thought so / now I test myself / I know where I stand now
• What is the best way to remember something? → use it / teach it to someone / write it down, then close the book
• Why do some people forget quickly? → they never tested themselves / rereading feels like learning / knowing is not the same as knowing
Part 2 cue card(60 秒):Describe a time you realised you had misunderstood something. You should say what it was, when it happened, how you found out, and what you changed afterwards.
Keywords(拿「背单词的错觉」练):felt prepared / tested myself once / half the words gone / closed the book / retrieval over re-reading / honest zero.
Three small drills, because naturalness lives in the mouth as much as in word choice.
• Stress: metacognition.
• Stress: literacy.
• Linking: test yourself.
• Confusable pair: comprehend ˌkɒmprɪˈhend 与 comprehensive ˌkɒmprɪˈhensɪv.
Three short sentences to close the loop, and today they all point at one thing. The Latin, Nosce te ipsum, know thyself, is the oldest metacognitive instruction on record, carved for the temple at Delphi and quoted for centuries since. The Spanish sentence is my own practice line, Saber que no sé algo ya es un paso adelante, knowing that I do not know something is already a step forward, which is exactly the honest zero today's chart asks for. And the French, Apprendre, c'est savoir ce qu'on ne sait pas, to learn is to know what one does not know, the sentence I want to say correctly before I can think it correctly. All three are short enough to say three times before bed.
Task 1(150 词,20 分钟):The bar chart shows adult literacy rates, as a percentage of the population aged 15 and over, in seven world regions and the world average, for two periods, 1995 to 2004 and 2015 to 2024. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
• Europe and Northern America recorded the highest adult literacy rate in both periods, reaching 98.7 per cent in 2015 to 2024.
• The world average rose from 82.4 to 87.4 per cent, yet four of the seven regions still fell below it in the later period.
• Central and Southern Asia saw the largest improvement, climbing more than thirteen percentage points, from 63.3 to 76.5 per cent.
• By contrast, Oceania barely moved, edging up just 0.4 percentage points over three decades.
• The gap between the highest and lowest regions remained wide, at roughly thirty percentage points.
The bar chart compares adult literacy rates, measured as a percentage of people aged 15 and over, across seven world regions and the world average, in two periods, 1995 to 2004 and 2015 to 2024. Overall, literacy rose in every region, yet the later-period figures still ranged widely, from 98.7 per cent in Europe and Northern America to 67.0 per cent in Oceania, a gap of roughly thirty percentage points.
Three regions, Europe and Northern America (98.7), Eastern and South-Eastern Asia (96.7) and Latin America and the Caribbean (94.8), stood above the world average of 87.4 per cent, which itself climbed from 82.4 over the three decades. The remaining four regions fell below that line, with Northern Africa and Western Asia at 81.5, followed by Central and Southern Asia at 76.5.
The clearest stories lie in the change. Central and Southern Asia recorded the largest gain, up 13.2 percentage points, while Sub-Saharan Africa, though improving from 59.0 to 68.5, and Oceania, up only 0.4 points, remained the lowest performers.
From the Han to the Qing, the same line runs through one city.
Then the Sixteen Kingdoms peak arrives, and it arrives hard.
The one node on this chart that surprises most people is 西夏. In 1146 the Xixia emperor honoured Confucius as 文宣帝 and ordered every prefecture to build temples, and the 武威文庙 still standing in the city is the physical trace of that Xixia school system. 斡道冲, a Xixia prime minister, translated the Analects into the Tangut script and wrote 《论语小义》 himself; after his death the emperor ordered his portrait hung in the school hall beside Confucius. And in 1203 the top-ranked examinee in the imperial palace examination was 遵顼, who would become the Xixia emperor, the only Chinese monarch in history to hold the title of zhuangyuan. Two more Liangzhou names sit near him: 权鼎雄, who took the same examination and rose to be 吏部尚书, and 高智耀, who passed at the very end of the dynasty and would go on to argue before the Mongol court that scholars should be exempted from corvée labour.
A single classic, taught in one city, translated into two scripts by two peoples.
And the last point of the chart is the one that keeps me reading. Look at what it does not show. There is no break anywhere. 永嘉之乱 the Central Plains burned and the scholars fled west; five regimes rose and fell in the corridor; the Mongols came and the dynasty ended. The line does not stop. Not once, over two thousand years, did the teaching stop. Confucius said 学而不厌, never tire of learning, and 诲人不倦, never tire of teaching, and it turns out the frontier town practised both of them for nineteen consecutive centuries, in a place where the nearest capital was two thousand kilometres away and the nearest university did not exist until the last few decades.
And the node that anchors the whole chart is not a Ming building at all. 凉州祀孔立学始于前凉 301 年, when 张轨 arrived in 姑臧 as 凉州刺史 and did the thing that decided everything: he recruited five hundred sons of the nobility from the nine commanderies, founded a school, and set up the first 崇文祭酒, an office ranked like a deputy governor, to preside over the spring and autumn rites of archery. The temple you can walk into today was rebuilt in the Ming, and it is the largest and best preserved Confucian temple in the northwest, but the institution it houses is seventeen centuries older than its walls. When a school builds a hall, puts a portrait of Confucius in it, and keeps the portrait in place for a thousand years, that is not a relic. That is a decision that was never revoked.
The chart above asks a region a blunt question: can its people read? 武威古称凉州, my home, answered that question in its own way long before statistics existed. At its heart stood the 武威文庙, the great academy of the northwest, founded in 301 CE, where for over seventeen hundred years the children of Liangzhou were taught to read the classics and to sit for the examinations. Its gate still carries a plaque reading 天下文眀, written by 牛鉴 in 1839, a Liangzhou man who rose to high office; the characters with the careful 眀 are a promise that a frontier town could be a seat of letters, not only of cavalry. And the habit the chart cannot measure, checking one's own understanding, was already written down in the canon those halls taught: 荀子's line, 学不可以已, joined with 君子博学而日参省乎己, learn broadly and examine yourself daily. That second half is metacognition in classical dress, a daily audit performed with brush and bamboo, centuries before the word existed.
Zoom the chart out to the whole nation and the progress story repeats. China's mean years of schooling for adults reached 7.6 in the latest figures, against a world mean of 9.5, itself up from 1.2 in 1870 (Barro-Lee dataset, UNDP Human Development Report 2024), and The floor keeps rising, in Liangzhou as everywhere. What does not rise by itself is the ceiling: the ability to ask, while reading, whether the reading has actually landed. That skill has no dedicated chart and no dedicated school building, yet it is the one thing an education, from the 文庙's classics to a modern language exam, was always supposed to leave behind.
And here the Liangzhou connection tightens one more turn. The first words a child in those halls would have recited were exactly these: They were not decoration; they were the method. 默而识之 is retrieval practice in three characters, 静下来把东西记进去; 学而不厌 is the refusal to be satisfied; 诲人不倦 is what a teacher owes the room. A Liangzhou boy leaving the 文庙 with those lines in his head had been given, in classical dress, the exact skill today's chart cannot measure: the duty to know the boundary of his own knowing.
And the same city produced something else the chart also cannot measure. In 1203 the top name on the Xixia imperial examination list was 遵顼, and four years later he was the emperor. He is the only Chinese monarch in history who was also a zhuangyuan, the top-ranked examinee in the palace examination. That is not a local curiosity; it is the frontier town producing a head of state through the very examination system the chart is about. And he shared that examination hall with 权鼎雄 of Liangzhou, who later became 吏部尚书, and with a Liangzhou line of scholars whose descendants would still be arguing about education in the Mongol court generations later.
The mountain's other gift is the proof that such training travels. 李自标(1760-1828), a Liangzhou man who grew up under this same 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), left as a young man to study Latin, Greek and European letters far away in Naples, and served as an interpreter for the British embassy that reached China in 1793. A boy who could audit his own learning in one language could rebuild himself in another; the portable part was never the vocabulary, it was the self-checking habit behind it.
