Nestled in the scenic Emeishan, Sichuan, ZOLAND·Emei Resort is a boutique mountain retreat crafted by Studio J. Bridgland. Guided by the philosophy of architectural quietude, the project transforms dilapidated structures into a sanctuary that blends seamlessly with the forested landscape. Embracing a landscape-first approach, it weaves tradition and modernity into every detail, inviting guests to escape distractions, slow down, and reconnect with nature and their inner selves in a space of profound calm.
The resort’s architecture draws deep inspiration from the local terrain and cultural heritage. Buildings are arranged in a staggered, village-like layout, evoking the charm of stone dwellings nestled on hillsides. Traditional pitched roofs and deep eaves are reimagined with a contemporary touch, bridging the past and present. The entrance façade, crafted from hand-chiseled textured concrete, exudes raw tactility—grounding the structure in permanence and material authenticity, while setting a timeless tone for the entire retreat.
The central courtyard stands as the social and spiritual heart of the resort, where nature and architecture converge against the majestic mountain backdrop. At its core, an ancient Zhennan tree— the valley’s oldest and tallest—stands guard, encircled by a reflecting pool. Its gnarled branches and lush foliage witness the passage of time, infusing the space with a sense of history and continuity. This outward-looking courtyard becomes a gathering place for guests, fostering quiet interactions amid the rustle of leaves and the gentle ripples of water, while connecting them to the land’s enduring story.
Each functional space embodies a harmonious blend of local craftsmanship and refined design. The dining hall features traditional Leshan grey tiles on the roof and a warm cedar ceiling framework, with walls clad in schist stone sourced from Emei Mountain—rooting the space in its geological and cultural context. Guest suites, perched at the site’s highest point, are discreetly integrated beneath a lifted green landscape, nearly invisible from the exterior. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame tranquil mountain vistas, turning each room into a private sanctuary where guests wake up to nature’s beauty.
Bathrooms and bathing spaces elevate the connection to nature and tactile comfort. Indoor bathrooms feature deep red local stone, its natural textures and muted tones creating a serene retreat within the mountain. Outdoors, a stone pool finished in washed stone and green granite merges seamlessly with the terrain, blurring the line between built form and landscape. Immersed in this open-air bathing space, guests are enveloped in nature’s embrace—listening to the rustle of forest, breathing fresh mountain air, and experiencing a profound sense of relaxation that nourishes both body and soul.
ZOLAND·Emei Resort’s design philosophy revolves around "slow time"—a conscious retreat from the chaos of modern life. Through expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing in spiritual spaces, the boundary between interior and exterior dissolves, fostering stillness and openness. Every material choice, from textured concrete to local stone and wood, serves to quiet the mind and heighten sensory awareness. This is more than a hotel; it is a haven that encourages reflection, inviting guests to notice the subtle beauty of their surroundings and reconnect with their inner selves in the embrace of Emeishan’s timeless landscape.
