Half masked scent, Half sensory plaque: The Olfactory Art Duo Exhibition in Shanghai
「嗅迹板板」嗅觉艺术展,于2024年10月26日于上海之白露MUSK嗅觉艺术空间内开幕,由艺术家smug huker与酸橙绿携手呈现,当日展览开幕便吸引了众多艺术爱好者前来,更在社交媒体上引发了热烈讨论,成为近日嗅觉艺术圈的一大亮点。此次国内首个嗅觉艺术双人展的成功举办,标志着嗅觉艺术这一小众领域在中国的崭新起点。
On October 26, 2024, at the Musk Olfactory Art Space in Shanghai,the highly anticipated exhibition “Half masked scent, Half sensory plaqueOlfactory”was on display. Presented by artists Smug Huker and L.G.R, the Duo exhibition attracted numerous artists,activists and musicians. And there are reportson social mediaand TV news in Shanghai. It was a special day since probably this is the first Duo olfactory art art exhibition in China,as rarely we see the olfactory art in the landscape of Chinese art world, it marks a new milestone in this field.
本次嗅觉艺术展地点位于上海长宁区新华路365弄园区6号的MUSK嗅觉艺术空间,展出内容包括艺术家Smug Huker的两个嗅觉艺术装置作品,以及艺术家酸橙绿的20幅肖像画作品。其中艺术家酸橙绿的作品是联手之白露嗅觉博物馆特邀调香师旭翔联合创作的11款肖像画对应气味,他们共同创造了一个前所未有的气味奇境探索空间。
TheMusk Olfactory Art Space, located atNo. 6, Lane 365, Xinhua Road, , Shanghai, is named after one of the most-known fragrance in ancient China, as well as a homophone of mask . The perfumer Xuxiang chen is so proud of himself for preparing smell chemicals for the works in this event . Visitors to the exhibition would firstly appreciate 20 paintings,mostly portraits ,made by L.G.R in 2022,when Shanghai was in severe quarantine at that time. Each smell was meticulously selected and designed for the painting.
关于酸橙绿的作品,他谈论到:肖像画,听上去好像碗里的谷子,既有着没有去壳的“原始新鲜”,又有着难以下咽的“老气”。比如古人所谓的“肖像” 是不肖子弟的负向词汇:不肖就是不像,不像自己的父祖;不能承袭祖先的事业,所谓背离即为不肖。因之,传统的肖像画一定要“肖”要“像“,要明示后人一种具象“范式”,并以此为依托,使得家族历史的单向时间轴得到严肃的延伸。然而,今日的肖像反而是不肖,不肖即是不屑,不屑于自我的藩篱界限。

For the artwork titled "Celestial Bash," the artist integrates elements of sculpture, sound, and scent, drawing inspiration from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and the intimate, warm "hug" found in underground music scenes. And the smell of beer also ‘lingers’in the air, a smell that crosses borders and backgrounds and is embraced by many people.
Through his creation, the artist expresses his profound reflections: Do you gather here with a purpose, or without any purpose at all? After all, why must there be a reason to enter a space, to be with anyone, or to do anything? Ultimately, we find ourselves in the same place, sharing the same fate, doing the same things, and interacting with the same beings—are we using every means possible or at a loss for what to do?
而另一个关于二手烟的装置灵感来源于日常社交场合中。在日常生活中烟民们似乎总能够以一种“气味霸权”,迫使不吸烟者在与大家共享空气的同时一起共享了二手烟。这样被动吸烟的结局也会导致人体表面和衣物家具上充满许多的三手烟。如今我们将它生产成为一种香水,供每一位“空气难民”自保:我每天都用这款香水(请不要在我面前抽烟了)。以此来讽刺社会中很多的隐形「规则」。
艺术家还透露说:“我每天都用这款香水。观众可在现场试用这款香水。”
Another installation addressing ‘secondhand smoke’ draws inspiration from everyday social situations. In daily life, smokers often exert a kind of "olfactory dominance," forcing nonsmokers to share not only the air but also secondhand smoke. This passive exposure also results in third-hand smoke contaminating people's surfaces, clothing, and furniture.
Today, we have transformed this concept into a perfume for every "air refugee" to protect themselves: "I use this perfume every day (please don't smoke in front of me)." This serves as a satire on many invisible "rules" in society.The artist also revealed, "I use this perfume every day. Visitors can try it out on site."
Smeller, instead of audience,can have an opportunity to experience the depth of smell,enhancing awareness of this pioneering art form in this space.
