A recent social media post showing a flight attendant of Hainan Airlines wearing a long, sharp-looking hairpin has ignited a heated discussion over whether such accessories are safe during flights.

The post, shared by a netizen who expressed concern that the hairpin looked "pointed and long", quickly drew mixed reactions. While some dismissed the worry as unnecessary, others raised serious safety questions — wondering if the hairpin could pose a risk to crew or passengers in case of sudden turbulence or during an emergency evacuation.

"I understand airlines want to showcase traditional elegance, but I can't help thinking — is it really safe at 10,000 meters?" one comment read. Another netizen suggested Hainan Airlines reconsider the use of hairpins, stating, "The beauty of accessories and safety can coexist. If not, safety should always come first."

However, some defended the look, describing the hairpin as elegant and not sharp. One even joked, "It's fine — last time I used it to open a package, it broke."

Hainan Airlines and several carriers under its parent company have long incorporated hairpins into their cabin crew's uniform. The silver hairpins, designed to align with the airline's overall style, reflect Eastern aesthetic traditions. As early as 2018, the airline showcased previous versions of the accessory in official promotional content, indicating that the practice is not new but part of its long-standing service image.

When asked whether passengers can carry hairpins on board, staff from four airports in different cities said that generally, non-sharp hairpins of moderate length are allowed through security, though final decisions are made on a case-by-case basis during checks. Items not permitted must be placed in checked luggage.

Customer service representatives from two Hainan Airlines subsidiaries described the hairpins as blunt-tipped and not dangerous. A representative from Hainan Airlines stated that the hairpin is a decorative item with no sharp parts, made from materials that do not compromise safety. The airline emphasized that safety always remains its top priority.
