Julia moved into the old cottage at the edge of town for peace and quiet.
The landlord had warned her, half-jokingly, thatone of the rooms talks back.
She’d laughed, thinking it was just a strange local legend.
The house was cozy—wooden floors, antique shelves, and a narrow door near the back that led toa tiny study room.
That’s where she first heard it.
It was her second night. Julia had been reading in the study when she muttered aloud:
“I wish the light were brighter.”
And the lightbulb above her flickered.
Then glowedbrighter.
She stared up at it.
Weird. Maybe just a coincidence.
The next night, she tested it.
As she entered the study, she said:“It’s cold in here.”
A moment later, theheater clicked on.
Julia stood still, her skin crawling.
She didn’t tell anyone.
Instead, she started talking more. Testing. Whispering things into the air.
And the roomanswered.
Subtly, at first.
A drawer opened when she asked for a pen. A book she couldn’t findslid out from a shelf.
It felt… helpful.
Like the roomwanted to be useful.
Until one night.
She was upset, crying after a bad phone call.
And she whispered:“I wish they’d disappear.”
The lights went out.
All of them.
The air wentcold.
And somewhere in the dark, the roomwhispered back.
“As you wish.”
The next morning, her phone had dozens of missed calls.
From friends. From family.
Asking why she had said that.
Asking what happened.
Because someone wasgone.
And she didn’t remember saying a word.
