招聘职位二:Research Fellow in Satellite Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Data Science

Position Overview:

Prof. Tongshu Zheng’s research group invites applications for a Research Fellow in Satellite Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Data Science to support a new research project focused on detecting unaccounted ethane emissions from oil and natural gas activities in major urban areas in China and the United States. This position will contribute to the development of a novel top-down framework that integrates hyperspectral satellite observations, atmospheric chemistry modeling, radiative transfer simulation, and neural network methods to quantify urban ethane emissions. The successful candidate will work with CrIS satellite data, GEOS-Chem simulations, and radiative transfer models such as UNL-VRTM to simulate top-of-atmosphere infrared radiances, together with physics-informed machine learning approaches, to derive top-down estimates of urban ethane emissions and compare them with bottom-up inventory-based estimates. The goal is to identify gaps and likely underestimation in reported emissions from oil and natural gas activities. Because ethane is co-emitted with methane and has few non-fossil sources, satellite observations of ethane provide an independent means of assessing whether recent policies and infrastructure upgrades are reducing natural gas losses and of identifying which segments of the natural gas supply chain contribute most to unaccounted-for emissions. This research will generate new evidence on the effectiveness of infrastructure improvements and emission control policies, while delivering the first long-term top-down versus bottom-up assessment of urban ethane emissions in China and helping address a critical gap in quantifying oil-and-gas-related losses in rapidly developing Asian cities. Improved constraints on ethane emissions will also strengthen the ability to track methane and non-methane volatile organic compound emissions from oil and natural gas activities. More broadly, the methodology developed through this work will be applicable to other trace gases and regions, advancing the use of satellite remote sensing for climate and air quality research.

Reports to:

Prof. Tongshu Zheng, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

Essential Duties:

  • Support the development of a satellite-based ethane retrieval framework using hyperspectral infrared observations from the Cross-Track Infrared Sounder (CrIS).

  • Generate and manage synthetic training datasets linking top-of-atmosphere radiances with ethane column amounts using radiative transfer simulations and atmospheric chemistry model outputs.

  • Process, analyze, and interpret large geophysical datasets from satellite observations, atmospheric models, and meteorological reanalyses.

  • Train, evaluate, and refine neural network models for ethane retrieval from hyperspectral satellite data.

  • Validate model performance against independent ground-based atmospheric measurements, including NDACC observations.

  • Apply trained retrieval models to multi-year satellite records to infer ethane column amounts over major urban regions in China.

  • Compare satellite-derived top-down estimates with bottom-up inventory-based simulations to identify likely underestimation of emissions from oil and natural gas systems.

  • Contribute to emission scaling, sensitivity analysis, and longitudinal trend analysis across years and seasons.

  • Use Linux/Unix-based computational environments and high-performance computing clusters to manage, process, and analyze large atmospheric and satellite datasets.

  • Produce publication-quality figures, reproducible workflows, technical documentation, and research manuscripts.

  • Collaborate with faculty and student researchers in environmental science, atmospheric chemistry, and data science.

  • Present findings in meetings, reports, conference submissions, and journal manuscripts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • University employees' job responsibilities will continue to expand in scope and depth as the University grows in size and complexity in its programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.

  • Interest in methane, ethane, air quality, remote sensing, climate policy, or energy systems research.

  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with scientific computing workflows.

  • Experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, or machine learning.

  • Familiarity with scientific and geospatial data formats used in atmospheric and remote sensing applications, including NetCDF and related file structures.

  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and using command-line tools for scientific data processing and analysis.

  • Experience working with large, complex, or high-dimensional datasets.

  • Ability to write clean, well-documented, and reproducible code.

  • Ability to work across disciplines including atmospheric science, machine learning, and environmental policy-relevant research.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in academic or technical settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or higher in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.

  • Experience with satellite remote sensing, hyperspectral data, or retrieval algorithms.

  • Familiarity with atmospheric chemistry or transport modeling, especially GEOS-Chem or related models.

  • Experience with radiative transfer modeling or physically informed machine learning methods.

  • Familiarity with emissions inventories, inverse modeling, or top-down vs. bottom-up comparison frameworks.
