Insummer's green the orchids bloom and rise,
Withverdant leaves that shroud the forest floor.
Redblossoms crown the violet stems, and prize
Nogaze from passersby—alone, they pour
Theirfragrance to the dusk, as daylight dies,
Andautumn winds begin their gentle roar.
Whenall bright hues must fade and seasons wane,
Whatfruit can fragrant aspiration gain?

Odeto Mortal Vicissitudes III
By ChenZi'ang (Early Tang Dynasty)
Translatedby Wang Yongli
TheDingling outpost stretches stark and vast,
Losttracks of time in boundless desolate plains.
Thewatchtowers crumble, shattered by the blast,
Andwhitened bones strew where the war remains.
Theyellow sand sweeps southward, dimming sight,
Thesun descends beyond the western height.
Threehundred thousand Han in armor came,
Tofight the Huns on plains of endless gloom.
I seebut slaughtered legions on the ground—
Whopities orphans where the frontiers bound?
Odeto Mortal Vicissitudes XI
ByChen Zi'ang (Early Tang Dynasty)
Translatedby Wang Yongli
I lovethe Master of the Ghostly Vale,
Whosebrook-side soul no dust of world assails.
Hegrasps the Art that rules the mortal pale,
Andleaves his form where only cloud prevails.
Whenseven kings in dragon-fury wage,
AndHeaven's throne stands empty in the age—
Vainglory held no worth for his clear eye;
Heveiled his brilliance, let the seasons fly.
Unfurled,his mind could fill the vast of space;
Curled,it would hide in smallest secret place.
Hesought not mountain-cedars' empty years,
Norroamed with deer to soothe the soul's arrears.

Wouldprize their plumes, though they themselves must die.
Insouthern heat their fleeting lives are reft,
Theirfeathers brought to gild the palace hall.
Todeck bright gems and brocade hangings left—
Thoughfar they dwell, men's snares shall see them fall.

Bornof a noble line from youth’s first day,
Icherished talent through each passing year.
Movedby the age, I vowed my land to stay,
Drewforth my sword from weeds of lowly sphere.
WestwardI rode to Dingling’s barren wall,
Northclimbed the terrace where chieftains once stood.
Frommountain heights I gazed o’er miles of all,
Andmused on ancient deeds in pensive mood.
Whosays old woes linger in memory’s glow?
Allgrief and strife dissolve to dust below.

Itrudge alone beneath the fading sun.
Streamsand plains blur the land of old delight,

Oldtrees fill mountain slopes in shadow laid.
Whatbitter grief stirs deep within my place?
Wildgibbons wail through every shadowed glade.

Farfrom Wu Gorge my boat drifts slow away,
I gazetoward Zhangtai’s terrace far below.
All Ba’s hills and streams fade out of day,
Mistlifts from Jingmen’s gorge where clear winds blow.

Gazinginto the Past atop Mount Xian
ByChen Zi'ang (Early Tang Dynasty)
Translatedby Wang Yongli
Wetether steeds upon this barren height,
Andclimb to view the ancient capital's trace.
Stillmourn the stele that drew tears of might,
Andlong for Wolong's plan, now lost to trace.
Far-flung,the cities fade to Chu's domain;
Halfhills and streams to Wu's old bounds incline.
Thesemounds and ridges rise but in their pride,
Whereare the sages who once lived and died?
Wildtrees are swallowed in the misty air;
Theferry-tower breathes the evening's care.
Whoknows that I, a wanderer far from home,
Standwrapt in thought, and into memory roam?

Fromfar, the Zhao commanders' fame is told.
Sincethat long battle fought at Changping plain,
Wherecan we find such heroes now again?

OnViewing a Jade of Jing
ByChen Zi'ang (Early Tang Dynasty)
Translatedby Wang Yongli
Inhide of ox, two white jades lie confined,
Yetblackest stains their purest surface bind.
Theirprice—a thousand gold—is vainly set,
Forall the world their truest worth forget.
Thoughpaints and hues may show no different face,
Theweight of light and heavy marks their place.
Oh,trust no carver's boast, however wise,
Lest, like Bian He, you mourn a gem's disguise!
Note:
BianHe was a loyal and persevering man from the Spring and Autumn period whooffered a jade to the King of Chu, was misunderstood and had both feet cut off,but eventually proved the stone contained a priceless treasure.
