Song of Yanmen Prefect’s Army
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Black clouds oppress the walls till they threaten toyield and rack,
Sun strikes the mail—gold scales yawn wide, flashingback.
Horns wail through autumn’s vault, a wild and brazenroar;
On the frontier rouge congeals to violet dusk, darkgore.
Half furled red flags draw near the Yi Stream’s shore,
Frost chills the drums, their faint beats rise no more.
To answer the sovereign’s grace from the Golden Terracehigh,
We draw our jade-dragon swords—and for our lord we die.
South Garden, Thirteen Poems V

Why bear no hook-blade, valiant man,
To recapture fifty frontier lands we command?
Step up the Lingyan Hall and see,
What scholar wins marquis’s degree?
South Garden, Thirteen Poems VI
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)

Iwaste my years on trivial wordcraft’s toil,
Crescentmoon hangs like jade bow's polished foil.
Seeyear on year war rages on Liaodong’s shore—
Wherecan my mournful verse its grief outroar?
Ode to Horses, Twenty-Three Poems V

Yan’smoon bends as a hook below.
Whengolden reins my steed shall bear,
I’llgallop through crisp autumn air.
Ballad of "Cease the Sword Dance"
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Nine pillars stand on carved stone base,
Leopard blood fills silver vase.
Feast music lacks the lute’s soft tone,
Sharp blades stand tall, split zither’s moan.
Thick crimson silk wraps beam and trunk,
Sun dyes the cloth; the king’s not drunk.
He glances thrice his jade ring bright,
Xiang Zhuang draws blade to start the fight.
Guards cry: “Cease dance, let strife subside!”
The true red dragon sits beside.
Mangdang auspicious clouds roll wide,
Xianyang’s royal aura clear as tide.
Iron locks bar every pass and gate,
Five-yard flags clang on iron plate.
Han Lord takes Qin’s seal in his hand,
No care for foes’ tormented end.
Sequel of Long and Short Ballads
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Long songs tear my worn robe apart,
Short verses break white hairs of heart.
No Qin King now to meet my gaze,
Day and night burns my inner haze.
I drink wine when my throat grows dry,
Pluck field grain when my hunger nigh.
Late April breathes a mournful sigh,
A thousand miles turn green on high.
Night peaks stretch far in shadow spread,
Bright moon sinks low beneath stone bed.
I pace the rocks her glow to chase,
Her light spills o’er the mountain face.
I cannot wander with her ray;
Ere song is done, my temples gray.
The Huang Tribal Grotto
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Sparrow-quick steps stamp sand’s thin sheet,
Four-foot horn bows with stone arrow heads meet.
Black flags wave thrice, bronze drums resound,
They cry like apes, shake quiver round.
Color scarves twist legs aslant and loose,
By stream blooms dye the clustered troops.
Late mist o’er pools white crocodiles wail,
Bamboo worms shoot sand as serpents trail.
They ride bamboo steeds home at slow pace,
But troops slaughter each other in Rongzhou's space.
Ancient Sorrow of Liang King’s Terrace
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
King Liang’s terraces rise mid-air,
Milky Way floods the pools at night fair.
Jade piles carve dragons before the gate,
Green dust sweeps sky, dew brings dole to the late.
They strike bells, drink wine, shoot heaven high,
Gold tiger furs bear blood-stained dye.
Each dawn and dusk they fear seas overturn,
Bind sun with long ropes, old joys to earn.
Lotus red fades in autumn’s breath,
Orchids weep, bereft of spring’s warm wreath.
Wild geese on reed isles bring spring’s faint sign,
Withered reeds whiten all autumn line.
The King of Qin’s Wine Feast
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Qin King rides tiger, roams all eight wide zones,
Sword light floods sky, heaven glows pale blue tones.
Xi He strikes sun, glass-like chime rings clear,
All age-old ash blown flat, past and present sheer.
Dragon spout pours wine, invite wine stars to stay,
Golden pipa hums through night till break of day.
Dongting rain gusts blow sheng’s soft cry,
Drunk, he shouts to moon: “Reverse your course on high!”
Silver clouds pile thick, jade palace blazes bright,
Palace steward calls: “The first night watch’s light.”
Flower tower phoenix sings sweet eerie strain,
Red-patterned sea silk red brocade breathes faintperfume’s gain,
Yellow swans dance, hold thousand-year wine cup high.
Immortal candle trees burn thin smoke nigh,
Clear zither played, drunk tears well up in eye.

Sword Song of the Secretary of Spring Palace
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
In elder's sheath lies three-foot water blade,
Once dived Wu pond, a flood dragon's life it laid.
Slant moon peeks through gaps, frost glints sharp andcold
Silk ribbon flat spread, no wind its folds control.
Sharkskin scabbard rough, thorns bristle hard and raw,
Grebe oil quenches blade, white silver plumes draw.
It holds the loyal heart of Jing Ke of old,
Let not Spring Palace's script its gleam behold
Twisted silk and gold tassels sway soft and slow,
Divine glow would slice jade from Lantian’s glow.
Draw forth the blade, West White God flees in fright,
Ghost mother wails loud on autumn’s wild height.
Song to Banish Sorrow
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Autumn wind sweeps ground, all grassparched and dry,
Flower shadows fade, late cold creeps nigh.
Scarce twenty years, my fate’s all unfulfilled,
My heart withers, like withered orchidchilled.
Tattered clothes, horse gaunt as stray curhound,
At crossroads strike sword, bronze roarsits sound.
Dismount at tavern, shed autumn robe wornthin,
Beg credit for a jar of Yiyang wine within.
I cry to heaven from the wine jar’s deep,
Bright day stretches, ten thousand miles inhazy keep.
Host bids me fortify my heart and mind,
Let vulgar troubles not my spirit bind.
Preface
In the eighth moon of the first yearof Qinglong, Emperor Ming of Wei commanded palace officials to cart west thebronze immortal who held the dew tray in Emperor Wu of Han’s time, intending toset it before his front hall. When the tray was torn away, the immortal, aboutto be loaded, shed tears in silence. Song of the Golden Bronze ImmortalDeparting Han Palace
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Lord Liu of Maoling, a fleeting guestof autumn gales,
Steeds neighed at night; by dawn notrace prevails.
Osmanthus scents float by the paintedrails;
Thirty-six palaces, draped in greenmossy veils.
Wei's officers haul the cart athousand li away,
From East Gate sour wind pierces hiseyes—they stray.
Vainly I bear the Han moon past thepalace gate,
For you, my clear tears like moltenlead fall straight.
Withered orchids escort the guest onXianyang's road,
If Heaven had heart, even Heaven wouldgrow old.
I carry the tray alone 'neath the moonso bleak,
Weicheng fades far, the waves' murmurgrows weak.
Toast to My Ambition
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Worn, wandering, I raise one wine cupslight,
Host lifts glass: “May guest live longin light.”
Lord Zhufu journeyed west, trapped farfrom home,
His kin snapped willow boughs whereguests would roam.
I’ve heard Ma Zhou once lodged atXinfeng inn,
World old, earth worn, none would himdiscern.
Only two lines of script upon hisscroll,
He dared confront the dragon throne, beg royal soul.
My lost soul wanders, no spell cancall it back,
Rooster crows, one cry unfurls whitedawn’s black.
Youth’s bold heart ought to graspclouds up on high,
Who grieves cold loneliness, and sitand sigh?
Ballad of the Old Jade Miner
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Dig jade, dig jade, seek the azurejade stone,
Carved as hair ornaments, mere vainbeauty shown.
Old man starves, freezes, even dragonsgrieve,
Blue Stream’s waters lose all pureclear weave.
At night he chews hazel nuts onridge’s crest,
Cuckoo spits blood, old man's tearsrun unrest.
Blue Stream devours all living menthat toil,
Dead a thousand years, men hate itsswirling coil.
Sloped mountain cypresses, wind roarsthrough rain,
Thin green ropes hang down springcliff’s damp chain.
In cold cottage, he thinks of his babesmall,
Vine hearts hang sad on old stonesteps’ tall wall.

The Noble Visit (Written When Han Yu and Huangfu ShiCame to My Hut)
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Green brocade robes like fresh chives glow,
Gold rings on bridles jingle slow.
Hoof-thunder hums through ear and hall,
They dismount, spirit surging tall.
Two masters of the eastern town,
Whose prose renown spreads far and down.
All twenty-eight stars fill their breast,
Nine essences through souls manifest.
Their verses soar to heaven’s dome,
Their pens repair the flaws of nature's loom.
This haggard bard, dry autumn reed,
Winds of glory o’er dead weeds succeed.
My wings droop now, behind wild swans I ride,
One day this snake shall turn to dragon’s pride.
Loud Ballad of Longing
By Li He (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang Yongli
Southwinds level peaks that once stood tall,
Godsends sea-god Wu to shift the ocean’s sprawl.
QueenMother’s peach blooms blush a thousand springs,
Long-livedPeng Zu and Wu Xian pass on their wings.
Greysteed’s coat bears coin spots neat and fine,
Springwillows veil soft yellow mist and shine.
Lutemaid holds golden cup and bids me drink,
Myspirit unripe—who my fate shall think?
Noneed to drown in Dirge of Captain Ding,
Heroesroam the world, no lord their worth to sing.
I’dweave silk threads to stitch Lord Pingyuan’s face,
Pourwine to soak Zhao’s old ancestral place.
Hour-dripjade toad chokes time’s racing tide,
Fairmaid’s thin locks scarce bear the comb’s light glide.
Iblush to watch youth’s brows fade into grey,
Attwenty, why waste days in dull delay?
