前言

PREFACE

Art continuously generates meaning within specific temporal, spatial, and cultural contexts. An artwork is not only brought into existence through the act of creation, but is also realized through the act of viewing; it belongs not only to the artist, but also to the context in which it comes to be present.

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue, titled “Presence,” brings together diverse works by Chinese contemporary artists and presents them at the Budapest International Art Fair. Here, “Presence” signifies not merely the appearance of artworks on the international art stage, but also the entry of a cultural experience, a spiritual temperament, and a distinctive mode of expression rooted in Chinese contemporary art into the shared language of global artistic exchange.

The meaning of art does not arise solely from the artwork itself; it is also generated through the field and environment in which the work exists. When an artwork enters a new cultural space, it retains its own cultural roots while continuously gaining new perspectives of viewing and new possibilities of interpretation. It is precisely through encounters between different civilizations that art expands its boundaries and enriches the meaning of its own existence.

Therefore, “Presence” is not merely a state of being, but also a cultural attitude. It represents an open and confident presentation, as well as an equal and sincere dialogue. The artist’s “presence” signifies entering the global artistic discourse through an independent artistic language, establishing a cultural position of one’s own through continuous exchange and conversation.

Walasse Ting styled himself “the Flower Thief”. His art consistently celebrates nature, sensory experience and the vitality of the present world. This lithograph Eternity, created in 1985, is a characteristic panoramic floral and fruit still life by Walasse Ting. The composition unfolds as a lavish, exuberant feast of life. Featuring full-bloom peonies, lilies and sunflowers across the picture plane, piled ripe fruits and colourful parrots in cages, it builds a rich, resplendent vision of life. Combining Oriental freehand brushwork with Fauvist bold colours, the work employs imagery of flowers, fruits and living creatures to interpret the eternal energy of life’s growth, prosperity and cycles. It stands as Walasse Ting’s sincere ode to the thriving vitality of all things in nature.
