Sparethem from axe and shear so keen,

Softcoolness fills the courtyard space,

Agentle calm that ne’er shall fail.

Ilove to rest beside the pane,

Songof Painted Bamboo (With Preface)

ByBai Juyi (Tang Dynasty)

Translatedby Wang Yongli

Preface:

XiaoYue, Director of Musical Rituals, excels at painting bamboo, unmatched in allthe realm. He guards his works closely; many beg for a single stalk or twig allyear yet gain none. Knowing I cherish fine art, he painted fifteen bamboostalks and sent them to me as a gift. I value his kindness and admire hiscraft, lacking fitting reward, I compose this ballad for him, one hundredsixty-six words in full.

Poem:

Ofall green plants, bamboo’s hardest to portray;

Nopainter past or present captures its sway.

OnlyXiao’s brush renders its true living grace,

Unrivaledsince the birth of painting’s artful space.

Othersdraw thick, bloated stalks, heavy and slow;

Histhin stems rise, each joint upright to grow.

Otherspaint limp, lifeless fronds that droop and fade;

Hisbranches breathe, each leaf stirs in the shade.

Rootlessthey rise, born from his inner mind,

Nosprouts precede—his brush creates their kind.

Bywild pond banks two dense groves stand tall,

Fifteenstalks framed within his painted wall.

Palebloom dust clings to their slender fair frame,

Windand mist’s soft mood each twig can claim.

Iglance up, doubting it’s mere painted page;

Ilean to listen, half-expecting wind’s soft rage.

Sevenwest stalks stand sturdy, bold and strong—

I’veseen such bamboos by Tianzhu Temple’s stone throng.

Eighteast stalks thin, cold, sparse and lean,

Asthose I watched in Xiangfei Temple’s rain scene.

Fewsouls discern their subtle grace and lofty thought;

Wegaze at each other and sigh for what’s sought.

Alas,Xiao Yue, your years now wear you thin,

Tremblinghands, dim eyes, hair white as frost’s cold skin.

Yousay this work shall be your final stroke;

Suchbamboo art shall never grace folk’s yoke.

Thinkingof Xin Da at South Pavilion on a Summer Evening

Mountainglow dips sudden to the west,

Pondmoon climbs slow from eastern crest.

Loosehair unbound, I taste dusk’s cool air,

Openwindows, rest in spacious care.

Lotuswinds bear soft sweet scent,

Bamboodew drips with clear descent.

Ireach to pluck my resonant lute,

Butfind no connoisseur to salute.

Thissight stirs longing for my old friend,

Tillmidnight dreams on him depend.
