I took Monday off to sit my driving theory test, and I didn't pass it. English first, then the honest bits. So here I am again, drilling questions, because I want that licence and I want to be properly on the road. I am going for C1, the manual one, so the five bay manoeuvres, hill start included, are already behind me. The saving grace is that this one has no cap on attempts: fifty questions, ninety marks to pass, two marks each, so I can only afford five mistakes. A narrow margin, but the door stays open. And when I do finally get behind the wheel, I have a soft spot for a Tesla: the bare dashboard, the near silence of the motor. I am not buying one next week, but a man is allowed to picture it.

I don't drive to work yet. Right now I get around by bus, or on foot when the weather behaves. The word I keep circling is commute, the one natives reach for. If I imagine describing my morning in English, I don't say "I use a car to go to work". That is the textbook version, not the street version. Natives say I drive in, or I'm a car commuter. Drive in is small and lovely: I drive in every morning. One day that line will be true for me.

I keep mixing up transit and transport. Public transit means the system, buses, trains, the metro. Transport is the broader idea, moving people or goods. So you ride public transit, but you study transport policy. Got it now. And carpool — I used to say share a car, which is fine but flat; carpool is the word that sounds like you've actually done it. We carpool to cut costs. There's the native rhythm.

My grandmother, back in 古凉州, used to say 细水长流 about saving anything, money, strength, even patience. 如今想想,commuting is the same: you don't sprint the morning, you pace it. You ease into the day. That's a phrase I picked up from a podcast, and it fits the 7 a.m. self perfectly.

Then there is the part of the question bank that is not really about rules at all. Road rage. 路怒症:the anger that takes over when driving meets pressure or frustration, sometimes spilling into aggressive driving. Horn, shouting, cutting someone off, braking hard on purpose, tailgating. Anger, the old saying goes, is the devil; the driver's-ed version is tidier and I like it better: anger is one letter short of danger. One letter, and that is the whole distance between arriving and not arriving. What strikes me is how thin the causes are: tiredness, running late, pressure from work or life, and then someone cuts in. Inside a closed cabin you read the other car as doing it on purpose, aimed at you. That is nearly the same mechanism as the paradox further down: everyone picks the route that suits them, and the whole network pays. Road rage is the emotional version of the same arithmetic. The fix is physical rather than moral: ease off the accelerator, open the gap, breathe a few times, and if you can, pull over somewhere safe and wait until your heartbeat and your shoulders settle.

And here is my own bit of luck. I took melatonin last night, was in bed by half past nine, asleep somewhere around ten, and up at half past seven. Roughly nine hours. Fatigue is one of the things that lights the fuse, so a night like that is not a luxury, it is road safety. Don't drive angry, and do not drive exhausted either. Three words each, and both worth more than any single line in the question bank.

And the numbers behind that are not soft at all. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that around 100,000 police-reported crashes a year are caused primarily by drowsy driving, with more than 71,000 injuries and more than 1,550 deaths, and monetary losses put at $12.5 billion. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety then put a gradient on it, holding the road and the hour steady and changing only the sleep: against drivers with seven hours or more in the previous 24 hours, six to seven hours means 1.3 times the crash risk, five to six means 1.9 times, four to five means 4.3 times, and under four hours means 11.5 times. And that is not a figure of speech. Being awake for 18 hours leaves you impaired at roughly a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05; at 24 hours it is about 0.10, which is above the 0.08 legal limit in every US state. Drivers who slept under four hours carry a risk in the same bracket as a driver about one and a half times over that limit. So severe sleep loss does not merely resemble drink-driving, it lands in the same band, and almost nobody treats it that way. It is exactly Matthew Walker's point: sleep is not a private luxury, it belongs to road safety. So nine hours last night was not indulgence. It was the cheapest piece of safety equipment I own.

Source: US NHTSA, drowsy-driving crashes, about 100,000 crashes / more than 71,000 injuries / more than 1,550 deaths per year; monetary losses $12.5 billion. Source: AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Acute Sleep Deprivation and Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash Involvement (2016), crash risk by hours of sleep versus drivers with 7 or more hours.

And there is one word here I did not know before: microsleep. 微睡眠:a few seconds of sleep that arrives without your permission and, worse, without your noticing it. Two or three seconds at the wheel is long enough to drift across a lane. So before driving, three quick checks, and together they take under a minute. Did I sleep enough last night, and have I been short for several days running? Are my eyes heavy, can I hold attention on one thing? Can I easily recall the road signs I have just passed? If any answer is the wrong one, the safest move is plain: stop somewhere safe and rest. And two popular fixes do not really work. Opening the window or turning the music up buys seconds, not alertness. Coffee cannot cancel the damage that sleep debt has already done. Skill decides how steadily the car goes; sleep decides whether you get home at all. That is a sentence worth memorising in English, because it is the kind that survives a two-minute answer.

And the public-safety version reaches past my own commute. Buses, coaches, freight: when a professional driver runs short on sleep, the passengers and every other road user carry the risk. The AAA Foundation counts more than one in five fatal crashes as involving a drowsy driver. Behind many sits a quiet culprit: obstructive sleep apnoea, OSA. 阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停:loud snoring, waking gasping, daytime drowsiness, and the driver often never knows. Studies put the crash risk for untreated OSA at two to seven times the normal level, some at six times. The early signs are plain and physical: constant yawning, eyelids that grow heavy, attention that drifts, a missed exit, the car wandering across a lane. Those are not failings. They are warnings to stop. For bus and lorry drivers, a full night before the shift, a steady routine, and a doctor's check when insomnia or loud snoring lingers are not private health habits alone. They are public-safety measures, plain and simple.

Which loops straight back to me. Both rest on the same unglamorous foundation: sleep. A tired mind drops the rule it knew cold and reads a scenario half a beat late. So the nine hours I banked last night were not a treat. They were the cheapest rehearsal for the test and for the band score alike. Sleep is the quiet co-signer of every pass.

And there is a quieter enemy than the road, and it sits at my desk. The all-nighter. 熬夜苦读 the midnight grind. I used to believe staying up late was the same as working hard. It is usually the opposite. Three traps, and I have stepped in all three. One, copying notes without the brain ever switching on, pure mechanical copying. Two, bashing my head against one impossible problem for an hour instead of moving on. Three, 偏科逃避:hiding in the subject I already like and dodging the weak one I actually need. What did those three buy me? A drowsy next morning, then a worse one after that. The fix is not willpower, it is order. Before studying, a short list. Phone on silent, put it across the room. When the eyes drop, stand up and walk a little. Every forty minutes, a few minutes off.

Charging the brain is cheaper than I thought. A ten-minute doze after a meal. A stretch, five minutes staring into nothing. Fruit and nuts instead of a third coffee. Sunlight, and a real conversation with someone, both cut the pressure. What actually separates one learner from another is not the hours logged. When I am tired, understanding, memory and judgement all run at a discount. So the sleep I am protecting is not a soft habit. It is the whole engine.

I take the bus every morning, and the traffic is heavy near the crossroads.

(take the bus 里 the 不能省;想说开车才是 drive in,那句先存着,留给拿到驾照那天。)

(en autobús 就是 by bus;说堵,native 更常说 hay mucho tráfico,比硬译 congestionado 自然。)

Quotidie mane iter ad officium facio.

• commute 可作名词也可作动词:a long commute(名词)/ I commute by train(动词)。别写 I do commute by train

• by + 交通工具 无冠词:by car / by bus / by train;但 on foot(步行)和 by bike 并存,ride a bike 更口语。

I've been driving in for years;讲某次经历用 I drove in yesterday。

• the number of 接单数动词,a number of 接复数:The number of car commuters is huge / A number of workers carpool.

I sit car to go to work;说 I get to work by car 或 I drive in。

I very like take bus;说 I really enjoy taking the bus。

• 交通很方便 → 不说 traffic is very convenient(traffic 指拥堵,不指便利);说 Getting around is easy 或 Transport is convenient。

• 路上很堵 → 不说 the road is very crowded;说 The traffic is heavy 或 roads are congested。

• 开车去:drive in / commute by car / get to work by car(最地道是 drive in)

• 搭公交:take the bus / ride the bus / use public transit

• 方便出行:get around easily / move around freely / it's well connected

• 拼车:carpool / share a ride / lift-share

• 减少开车:cut down on driving / drive less / leave the car at home

Eight words for getting around, each with a line I could actually say out loud:

• commute kəˈmjuːt — 通勤(动词/名词)。I commute by train, about forty minutes each way.

I rely on public transit to keep costs down. 同族:transition、itinerary(10-27 文化期学过)。

• carpool ˈkɑːrpuːl — 拼车。We carpool to cut costs. 合成词 car + pool(共用资源)。

• congestion kənˈdʒestʃən — 拥堵。Rush-hour congestion is the worst part of my day. 词根 gerere(运载、携带),con- 一起 → 挤到一起。同族:congest、gesture。

• hub hʌb — 枢纽。The city wants to become a regional transport hub.

The centre is a pedestrian zone now.

Good infrastructure makes commuting bearable. infra-(在下)+ structure(结构)。

The modal split here still favours cars. modal 来自 mode(方式),看图写作核心词。

1. The lion's share of ... goes to ... The lion's share of commuters goes to private cars.(回扣 10-21 文化期 tick all the boxes 的"清单"意象,这里反过来讲"最大份额"。)

2. ... accounts for the largest slice at X%. — …… Driving alone accounts for the largest slice at 69.2%.

⭐ ⭐ 今日表达 TOP3(地道向)

1. drive in — 开车上班最自然的说法,比 go to work by car 活。I drive in every morning.

Getting around this city is a breeze.(breeze = 轻而易举,native 爱用)

3. ease into the day — 慢慢进入状态,形容不慌不忙的早晨通勤。I ease into the day on the train.

The sentence was commuted to life.(刑期被减为无期)。

He has the drive to succeed.(他有成功的劲头)。

Short videos are all the rage.(短视频正风靡)。

• pool:今日义"拼车(carpool)";另一义"水池、资源池",如 a pool of talent(人才库)。

• fare:今日义"车费"(bus fare);另一义"表现、进展",如 How did you fare?(你那边怎么样?)。

口语里说"车费"用 fare 而非 fee;commute 作"通勤"时别写成 commute to work by car 这种混搭,直接 I commute by car。

Braess's paradox: when building a road makes traffic worse

In 1968 the German mathematician Dietrich Braess showed something that feels upside-down: adding a new road to a congested network can raise total travel time for everyone. The mechanism is game-theoretic. Each driver picks the route that is fastest for them, treating other cars as background noise. When a shortcut opens, too many people flood it, the new link jams, and the old links stay crowded too. The system as a whole gets slower even though every individual acted rationally. Planners now model networks with this in mind before laying asphalt.

Word origin: paradox comes from Greek para- (beside, against) + doxa (opinion, belief) — literally "against what you believe." A paradox is a belief-breaker. The same doxa root sits in orthodox (right belief) and dogma (a fixed opinion).

The takeaway for a language learner is neat: more words are not always better, just as more roads are not always faster. Pacing your output, like pacing a commute, beats cramming.

Standing on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)and looking east, the whole argument lands in one glance: 古凉州今武威 has always been a crossroads. Wuwei, called Liangzhou in antiquity, was the northwest capital and a city of six dynasties, what people once called a strategic thoroughfare. I keep coming back to one line of my own: transport is the lifeline of a scenic area. A place's culture and tourism live or die by how it moves. So if ancient Liangzhou is to become a world-class tourist city, it has to become a transport hub of the northwest first. The old 姑臧 walled city ran seven li north to south and three east to west, a road net measured by feet and cart wheels. Today's three-hour tourism circle simply redraws that same net with high-speed rail and self-drive. Braess's paradox adds a quiet warning: more roads are not automatically better, and a bigger hub is not automatically smarter. Plan it wrong and one extra road buys you one extra jam. That, I think, is the whole lesson of a commute chart, read from a Liangzhou hillside.

今天的新词成了一张网:mūtāre(变:commute / mutual / mutable)+ ire/it-(走:transit / transition / itinerary)+ gerere(运载:congestion / congest / gesture)+ ped-(脚:pedestrian / pedal / expedition)+ struct-(建:infrastructure / structure / construct)。回扣 10-27 文化期的 metron(度量)与 iter(行走:itinerary)。

• 10-21 文化期 heritage(hered 继承)/ tick all the boxes。

• 10-27 睡眠期 drop off(睡着)/turn in early(早睡)/sleep through(一觉到天亮)。 I turned in early, took melatonin, and slept right through till half past seven. Because fatigue is one of the fuses.

Q1: How do you usually get to work or school?

A: (key: commute / take the bus / working on my licence) — For now I take the bus, but I'm working on my licence, so ask me again in a month.

Q2: Is parking difficult in your city?

A: (key: congestion / squeeze / full) — It's a squeeze at peak hours; lots fill up by eight.

Q3: Would you like to work from home more?

A: (key: ease into / pace / flexible) — I'd love the flexibility — you ease into the day without the commute.

• 连读:drive in → draɪv ɪn 常连成 /draɪ vɪn/,"v" 与 "i" 自然黏连,听感像 "drivin'"。

One idea, four languages: a road network is what turns separate places into a single body.

Omnes viae Romam ducunt.(all roads lead to Rome;原指罗马,这里借来说路网把人连起来)

El transporte es la sangre de una ciudad.(transport is the blood of a city;自拟练习句,非古籍引文)

(みち は ひと を つなぐ,michi wa hito o tsunagu,roads connect people。

A city is only as connected as its weakest link.(回扣今日 Braess's paradox:断在最弱那一环,全网络照样瘫)

That English line is the one I want to keep: no matter how many roads you add, the weakest link still decides the whole network. And the Japanese one is the one I want to keep saying out loud, because tsunagu is short enough to survive a nervous mouth. Say the three syllables slowly and the whole sentence falls out: michi wa, hito o, tsunagu.

The chart below shows how workers in the United States travelled to work in 2023.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

• The largest slice was held by X at 69.2%, followed by Y at 13.8%.

• Together, the three minor categories made up less than a fifth of the total.

• Driving alone accounted for the largest share at 69.2%.

• Public transport and active travel remained marginal, at 3.5% and 4.5% respectively.

1. Overview: private cars dominated; driving alone was the clear leader; working from home a substantial minority; public and active travel marginal.

2. Drove alone 69.2%, by far the biggest slice; worked from home 13.8% (second); carpooled 9.0%.

3. Public transportation only 3.5%; walking, cycling and other means 4.5% combined.

4. Implication: the American commute is overwhelmingly car-based; non-car modes are a thin edge.

"The pie chart breaks down how American workers got to work in 2023. The biggest slice, by far, is driving alone — about 69 per cent. Working from home is next at roughly 14 per cent, then carpooling at 9. Public transport is tiny, just 3.5 per cent, and walking, cycling and other ways add up to 4.5. So the headline is clear: the US commute is overwhelmingly by car."

练习点:用 the biggest slice / by far / add up to 这些 native 搭子,把"最大块""远不止""加起来"说出来,而不是干巴巴念数字。
