讲座摘要

There is little need, I imagine, to persuade anyone that hope matters. It pulses at the heart of human experience—shaping lives and threading its way through every corner of the world. Yet beyond these grand gestures, I contend that what we most urgently require is hope education: a deeper understanding of what it means to hope well. In this task, I turn to Aristotle. Despite the centuries that separate us, Aristotle’s thought, I believe, speaks with remarkable relevance to our contemporary world. Does Aristotle offer a vision of hope that is both substantial and meaningful? I believe he does. His ethical writings provide fertile ground for enriching the ongoing philosophical conversation about hope (elpis). I will argue that, for Aristotle, hope is not an emotion, but an intellectual state that carries with it a distinctive motivational force.

主讲人简介

帕夫洛斯·康托斯（Pavlos Kontos），希腊帕特拉斯大学哲学系教授，主要研究领域为亚里士多德实践哲学和现象学。他近来出版的著作包括《亚里士多德伦理学导论》（Introduction to Aristotle's Ethics, Palgrave MacMillan, 2023）、《亚里士多德论实践理性的范围》（Aristotle on the Scope of Practical Reason, Routledge, 2021）、《重思亚里士多德的道德实在论》（Aristotle's Moral Realism Reconsidered, Routledge, 2013）；主编《亚里士多德著作中的恶》（Evil in Aristotle, Cambridge University Press, 2018）、《现象学与政治的首要性》（Phenomenology and the Primacy of the Political, Springer, 2017）；目前，康托斯教授正在和大卫·里夫（C. D. C. Reeve）教授一起主编全新的英文版《亚里士多德全集》（Hackett, 2025）。

主持人简介

刘玮，中国人民大学哲学院教授，美国加州大学伯克利分校、美国普林斯顿大学、德国慕尼黑大学、希腊帕特拉斯大学访问学者，主要研究领域为古希腊哲学、西方伦理学和政治哲学史。
