Grain Rain is the sixth solar term in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar and the final solar term of spring. The "Three Pentads" of Guyu—three natural phenomena observed during this period—symbolize the cyclical changes in nature as the season transitions. These observations not only reflect ancient China’s meticulous understanding of natural rhythms but also embody the wisdom of agricultural civilization in harmonizing with nature. For ancient farmers, these shifts served as crucial guidelines for planning agricultural activities.

Health Preservation During Grain Rain

After the Grain Rain solar term, humidity in the air gradually increases, making it essential to guard against the invasion of "dampness pathogens" that harm the body. Recommendations include ventilating rooms, staying warm, avoiding cold exposure, basking in sunlight, and engaging in moderate exercise. If dampness has already invaded the body, incorporate foods that promote diuresis and dispel dampness into daily diets, such as corn, poria cocos, winter melon, barley, and adzuki beans.

Traditional Chinese Medicine posits that "dampness encumbers the spleen-earth", as dampness pathogens easily damage the spleen’s yang energy. During Grain Rain, protecting the spleen is vital: it prepares the body for the upcoming humid summer and prevents ailments caused by damp-heat pathogens. Additionally, spring corresponds to the Wood element in the Five Phases theory, making late spring an ideal time to nourish the liver.

In the 15 days surrounding Grain Rain, the spleen enters a period of heightened activity. A robust spleen strengthens the stomach, enhancing digestive functions and nutrient absorption. This makes it an optimal time for supplementation. However, moderation is key—unlike winter’s intensive nourishing practices, focus on foods that tonify blood and boost qi, such as red dates, goji berries, and yam, to avoid overburdening the body.
