韦应物（约737—约792），京兆万年（今陕西西安）人，出身京兆韦氏旁支。天宝末年为玄宗三卫近侍，任侠放浪；安史乱后失势，折节入太学读书。代宗朝起仕，历洛阳丞（因惩不法军士被讼弃官）、京兆功曹、鄠县/栎阳令，建中四年出为滁州刺史，后转江州刺史、左司郎中，贞元四年守苏州，世称“韦苏州”。诗学陶渊明、谢灵运，兼取王孟，白居易评“五言高雅闲淡，自成一家”，“韦应物体”，与王维、孟浩然、柳宗元并称“王孟韦柳”。《全唐诗》卷186—195收其诗十卷。
这辑甄选的是他“吏隐人格”的另一半——把宦游、思归、愧俸、故人离散放进清秋淮雨、孤驿雁声里写。
诗史价值：盛唐王孟的山水是“无我之境”，韦应物这辑是“有我之宦”——把地方官的身份焦虑、亲故离散、秋山归思揉在一起，开中唐“清淡中有职事痛感”一路，下启柳宗元。
